ASME MAGAZINE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. Andrew Heller '03 of Berkeley College will intern at Business Week as an American Society of Magazine Editors summer editorial intern.

ATLANTIC MONTHLY STUDENT WRITERS' CONTEST. In the nonfiction category, Jessica Cohen '03 of Timothy Dwight College received first-prize honors; Maeve Herbert '04 of Davenport College received second-prize honors; and Matthew Underwood '03 of Davenport College received honorable mention. In the poetry category, David William Gorin '04 of Trumbull College received honorable mention.

AUERBACH GRAYSON-LEITNER INTERNSHIPS. Auerbach Grayson-Leitner International Internships support internships in pre-selected brokerage and/or investment banking firms in Budapest, Istanbul, Moscow and Zagreb. This year's recipients are Vanessa Janowski '04 of Jonathan Edwards College, Regina Sieber '02 of Berkeley College, Mark Dinner '03 of Calhoun College, Siao Fan Choo '02 of Jonathan Edwards College and Stefana Constantinescu '03 of Silliman College.

BARRY FELLOWSHIPS. Thomas C. Barry Travel Fellowships, established in 2002, support foreign language and cultural studies at all levels, volunteer or other work, or purposeful travel abroad, in countries outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Awards were made to Colleen Carey '04 of Calhoun College for a volunteer internship with the Gabon Ministry of Forests and Waters and Tiffany Pham '05 of Saybrook College for study of traditional folk singing in Vietnam.

BEINECKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. A Beinecke Scholarship supporting two years of graduate study in any discipline was awarded to Matthew Underwood '03 of Davenport College.

BHATT FELLOWSHIP. A Bhatt Fellowship providing support for research or an internship in South Asia was awarded to Sanjit Konda '03 of Timothy Dwight College.

BIANCAMARIA FINZI-CONTINI CALABRESI PRIZES. Biancamaria Finzi-Contini Calabresi Prizes, given annually for the best senior essays written for the comparative literature major, were awarded to Matt Murcheson of Branford College, for "Reading the 'Mutatas Formas': Formal Instability and Depictions of the Metamorphic in Ovid, Yeats, Valéry and Pound"; and Alan Schoenfeld of Saybrook College, for "Baudelaire's 'L'Albatros' and Postcolonial Literature." Special mention was given to Ruddy Wang of Silliman College for "Behind the Painted Screen: Dreams and Absence in Chinese Lyric Poetry."

BILDNER ISRAEL AND JEWISH STUDIES TRAVEL GRANTS. The Robert L. Bildner '72 and Elisa Spungen Bildner '75 Israel and Jewish Studies Travel Grant, which provides support for travel to Israel for research or language training or for travel to any other country for research in the field of Jewish studies, was awarded to Elizabeth Svoboda '03 of Ezra Stiles College.

BILDNER PRIZES IN LATIN AMERICAN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES. Natalia Lopez-Castro '02 of Trumbull College received an award in honor of Professor José Arrom for an outstanding essay written in Spanish on Latin American literature, "El Apocalipsis del Crack." Sydney Leavens '02 of Calhoun College received an award for the graduating senior who has achieved an oustanding academic average in Spanish courses and has demonstrated greatest improvement in his or her knowledge of the Spanish language and/or of Hispanic literatures. Heather Flynn '02 of Pierson College received an award in memory of Patricia Bildner, for an outstanding essay written in Portuguese on Brazilian literature, "A Presença Estrangeira na Belle Époque Carioca (1898­1914)." David C. Stewart '02 of Jonathan Edwards College received an award for the graduating senior who has achieved an outstanding academic average in Portuguese courses and has demonstrated the greatest improvement in his or her knowledge of the Portuguese language and/or Luso-Brazilian literature. Savaria Harris '03 of Ezra Stiles College received the Albert Bildner Travel Prize supporting travel to Latin America for research for the senior essay.

BLANNING FELLOWSHIPS. Wendy E. Blanning Memorial Summer Fellowships provide support to students to pursue professional projects. The recipients and their projects are: Jennifer Stock '03 of Pierson College, to write a one-act opera based on Boethius' "The Consolation of Philosophy"; and Kristina Weaver '03 of Berkeley College, for an independent research project titled "Improving Reciprocal Intellectual Exchange Between Yale and African Universities."

DAVID L. BOREN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS. Under the National Security Education Program, the U.S. government provides scholarship assistance for overseas study of languages and cultures in regions outside of Western Europe, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Two students have received awards: Tammer Riad '04 of Pierson College for a summer program in Egypt; and Andrew Towne '04 of Silliman College for a year-long program in Kenya.

CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT JUNIOR FELLOWSHIPS. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace awarded year-long internships to Bethany Lacina '02 of Ezra Stiles College and Dipali Mukhopadhyay '02 of Branford College.

CHARLES KAO FUND AWARD. The Charles Kao Fund provides support for summer research in East and Southeast Asia focusing on the impact of technology transfer processes between Asia and the West, and the social, cultural and political transformations in these regions. This year's winner is Van Nguyen '03 of Morse College.

CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP. A Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship funding one year of engineering, mathematics or science study at the University of Cambridge was awarded to Thomas Hocker '02 of Pierson College. Hocker will pursue an M.Phil. in chemistry.

JACK KENT COOKE GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP. A Cooke Fellowship supporting up to six years of graduate study was awarded to Eugenie Brinkema '02 of Saybrook College.

DELL AWARD. The Donald L. Dell Award is a new biennial award established by Donald Dell '60 to support post-baccalaureate study, an internship or other activity that demonstrates a continued commitment to excellence. The award, designated for a graduating senior who displays a capacity for discipline and leadership in his or her chosen field and sportsmanship in the Yale tradition, was given to Andrew Liverman '02 of Silliman College, who will be training with the U.S. National Rowing Team in preparation for the 2002 World Rowing Championships.

ENGINEERING AND APPLIED PHYSICS AWARDS. The Donald Warren McCrosky Memorial Prize was awarded to Molly Silfen '02 of Calhoun College; the Henry Prentiss Becton Undergraduate Prize was awarded to Jasmina Hasanhodzic '02 of Morse College; the Edward O. Lanphier Memorial Prizes were awarded to An Phuoc Doan '02 of Branford College and Alan Ghelberg '02 of Branford College; the Department of Chemical Engineering Prize Junior Prize was awarded to Mark Marion '03 of Silliman College; the Harry A. Curtiz Prize was awarded to Jeffrey Wilbur '02 of Morse College; the Franz Tuteur Memorial Prize was awarded to Jonathan Malkin '02 of Morse College; the Department of Applied Physics Prize was awarded to Robert Jahn '02 of Morse College; the D. Allan Bromley Prize in Biomedical Engineering was awarded to Tomer Posner '02 of Timothy Dwight College; the Belle and Carl Morse Junior Prizes in Engineering and Applied Science were awarded to You Jung Byon '03 of Ezra Stiles College and Aryesh Mukherjee '03 of Jonathan Edwards College; and the D. Allan Bromley Prizes in Environmental Engineering to Brenden McEneaney '02 of Jonathan Edwards College and Regina Sieber '02 of Berkeley College.

EUROPEAN UNION FELLOWSHIPS. European Union Fellowships, which support research focusing on the European Union or European integration, were awarded to Kerrie Lenhart '04 of Saybrook College, Eric Maltzer '03 of Silliman College, Melissa Muscat '03 of Morse College and Alexandra Sova '04 of Saybrook College.

FIELD PRIZE. The Theron Rockwell Field Prize for a poetic, literary or religious work was awarded to Rachel Kamins '02 of Jonathan Edwards College for her translation of the play "The Pseudolus of Titus Maccius Plautus."

FOX INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS. Fox International Fellowships support research exchanges in economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance, or contemporary history between Yale and the Free University of Berlin, Moscow State University, Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge University, Tokyo University, Fudan University in Shanghai, Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and El Colegio de Mexico. This year's recipients are Olivia Wang '02 of Calhoun College, George Lai '02 of Timothy Dwight, Allie Yang '02 of Berkeley College, Christine Brouwer '02 of Trumbull College, Michael Gottesman '02 of Silliman College, Aakanshka Pande '02 of Trumbull College and Lucien Lefcourt '02 of Silliman College.

FULBRIGHT GRANTS. Nine seniors will study or do research abroad as winners of Fulbright Grants. The students and their projects are: Ian Cornwall of Trumbull College will study the effects of European Union legislation on domestic politics in Spain; Denise Hahn of Morse College and Elizabeth Hardy of Pierson College will work as teaching assistants in South Korea; Jonathan Kaufman of Morse College will conduct research on issues of assimilation and minority group status in Taiwan; Jocelyn Lin of Calhoun College will study the genetic diversity of commercially important marine organisms in Japan; Leah Sartorius of Ezra Stiles College will conduct research in virology at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France; Sara Thierman of Pierson College will work as part of a research team focusing on the prevention of pediatric AIDS in Zambia; and Kristina Toth of Morse College will conduct ethnographic research on youth subcultures, music, and social change in Japan.

GANZFRIED FELLOWSHIP. The Ganzfried Family Travel Fellowship, which provides support for research on all subjects related to communal and religious tolerance and understanding, security and cooperation, natural and economic resources, environmental, scientific and technological collaboration and development, communication, culture, gender and family in Israel or for academic work elsewhere in the field of Jewish studies, was awarded to Kevin Gordon '02 of Ezra Stiles College.

GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIPS. Gates Cambridge Scholarships, which support up to four years of postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge, were awarded to seniors Jessica Bulman of Berkeley College, Juliana Ochs of Jonathan Edwards College, Alan Schoenfeld of Saybrook College and Jonathan Schoenfeld of Jonathan Edwards College, and alumna Marissa Wagner '01.

GOLDMAN SACHS GLODAL LEADERS PROGRAM. Andrew Klaber '04 of Trumbull College was selected as a Goldman Sachs Global Leader for his outstanding academic and leadership achievements.

GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are merit-based awards supporting one or two years of study for American undergraduates with demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in the natural sciences and mathematics. Benjamin Elder '03 of Calhoun College, Edward Laird '04 of Branford College and Stephen Waterford '04 of Jonathan Edwards College were named Goldwater Scholars.

GORDON GRAND FELLOWSHIPS. The Gordon Grand Fellowship is a new post-baccalaureate award established by the Council of Masters to honor Gordon Grand Jr. '38. The fellowship supports a year of travel, work or research abroad or in the United States. Four awards were made this year: Jane Gao '02 of Jonathan Edwards College for work with the China Association for NGO Cooperation as an assistant for its project on strengthening China's legal aid system; Noam Schimmel '02 of Saybrook College for work with NGOs and government agencies in Argentina and South Africa to help the street children of Buenos Aires and Cape Town; Margaret Sherriffs '02 of Davenport College for work with the NGO Omara conducting research in ecology and conservation biology on Isla Navarino, Chile; and Ann Thai '02 of Davenport College for work with the NGO Education for Development, which acts as a consultant to local non-profit organizations in Vietnam.

HARRIMAN FELLOWSHIP. Adam S. Rein '03 of Branford College was named one of three national winners of the Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships for 2002. He will serve as a fellow at the U.S. Embassy in London.

HEGEL PRIZE. The Richard Hegel Prize, named after Richard Hegel (1950 Engineering), the municipal historian for the City of New Haven, was awarded to Laura McCargar '02 of Pierson College for her essay "HOPE for Community? Quinnipiac Terrace, HOPE VI and Community in Public Housing."

JOHN HEINZ GOVERNMENT SERVICE FELLOWSHIPS. Established by the Class of 1960 in honor of the late Senator John Heinz, the Heinz Fellowships support summer internships in federal, state or local government. This year's recipients are: Megan Dean '03 of Berkeley College '03 for a Department of State internship at the American Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria; Adam Fee '03 of Berkeley College for an internship with the State Attorney's Office in New Haven; Christopher Michel '03 of Silliman College for an internship at the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C.; and Emily Williams '03 of Berkeley College for a State Department internship at the Bureau of Near East Asian Affairs in Washington, D.C.

HENRY FELLOWSHIP. The Henry Fellowship is an exchange program between Harvard and Yale universities and Cambridge and Oxford universities. One Henry Fellowship is made available annually for a Yale senior to study at either Oxford or Cambridge. This year's recipient is Andrea Goldberg of Timothy Dwight College, who will pursue an M.Sc. program in economic and social history, with a focus on the history of medicine, at Oxford.

HOWLAND FELLOWSHIPS. The Charles P. Howland 1891 Fellowship supports study or research abroad for seniors who demonstrate promise of useful activity to improve international relations. Two awards were made: Jane Gao of Jonathan Edwards College for a project on China's legal aid system with the China Association for NGO Cooperation; and Kevin Gordon of Ezra Stiles College for an internship with the Center for Justice and International Law in Costa Rica.

HUANG TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS. Six seniors were awarded Parker Huang Undergraduate Travel Fellowships, which funds study and travel in the non-English speaking countries of Africa and Asia, as well as countries in Eastern Europe and Latin America. The award recipients and their projects are: Orianne Dutka of Jonathan Edwards College, to pursue a Master of Social Science degree in law and public affairs at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Joshua Jelly-Schapiro of Calhoun College, for work on education and development projects with a grassroots community center in Cuba; Charles Wiley Kestner of Timothy Dwight College, for intensive Chinese language study at IUP-Beijing; Elizabeth Tammy Kim of Trumbull College, for research on the aesthetics of Eastern arts in Korea; Emma Lieber of Branford College, for study at the University of St. Petersburg Center for Russian Language and Culture; and Marianne Montalvo of Branford College, for language study and research on the relationship between Protestants and Augusto Pinochet in Chile.

HUGHES FELLOWSHIPS. Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellowships in the Biological Sciences supporting up to five years of doctoral study were awarded to one senior, Jason David Arroyo of Branford College, and one alumnus, Brian Elliot Pence '96.

KEASBEY SCHOLARSHIP. A Keasbey Scholarship supporting two years of study in the United Kingdom was awarded to David Pozen '02 of Trumbull College, who will pursue an M.Phil. in comparative social policy at Oxford.

KERNAN PRIZE. The Alvin B. Kernan Prize, given annually for the best senior essay written for the literature major, was awarded to Anya Kamenetz of Davenport College for "The 'Punctum': The 'Proof of Art' in the Nonfiction of Joan Didion and Vladimir Nabokov." Special mention was given to Nathaniel Rich of Calhoun College for "Then I suddenly began to buy: The Metropolitan Consciousness of 'Zeno'."

KINGSLEY TRUST ASSOCIATION SUMMER TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS. Established last year in honor of Yale's Tercentennial by the Kingsley Trust Association (also known as the Scroll and Key Society), the fellowships commemorate Yale College graduates who attained distinction in their life's works. This year's recipients are: Samantha Culp '04 of Timothy Dwight College, the Maynard Mack Fellowship in Humanities, for a study of traditional house-building arts on the Western Pacific island of Yap; Gabriel Greenberg '04 of Morse College, the Cole Porter Fellowship in Music and Theater, for study of the American folk singer Vera Hall; Madhumita Lahiri '04 of Branford College, the Dean Acheson Fellowship in Politics and Foreign Affairs, for research in India on the rights of women and minorities in personal law; Charles Lockwood '04 of Trumbull College, the Cole Porter Fellowship in Music and Theater, for study of the tradition of North European organ building; and Marina Spitkovskaya '04 of Silliman College, the Harvey Cushing Fellowship in Science, for her work as a research assistant at the Tilganga Eye Center in Nepal.

LATIN AMERICAN AND IBERIAN STUDIES TRAVEL GRANTS. Latin American and Iberian Studies Travel Grants providing support for research or study abroad in Latin America, the Caribbean, Portugal or Spain were awarded to Savaria Harris '03 of Ezra Stiles College, Alvaro Huerta '03 of Branford College, Kathryn Kline '03 of Berkeley College and Julia Tierney '03 of Pierson College.

LEITNER INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY SUMMER AWARDS. The Georg Walter Leitner Program in International Political Economy, which funds research on international political economy, have awarded fellowships to Colleen Carey '03 of Calhoun College, David Corson-Knowles '03 of Trumbull College, Bethany Lacina '02 of Ezra Stiles College, Kris Daniel Kurtz-Phelan '03 of Berkeley College, Katherine Ling '03 of Timothy Dwight College, Swati Pandey '04 of Trumbull College, Catherine Pitt '04 of Morse College, Shayna Strom '02 of Davenport College, Robynn Sturm '02 of Davenport College, Prateek Tandon '03 of Pierson College, Julia Tierney '03 of Pierson College and Andrea Wolf '03 of Jonathan Edwards College.

LES ASPIN FELLOWSHIPS. Les Aspin '60 International Public Service Fellowships support summer internships related to the study of national security and international affairs in the public or non-profit private sector. LIGHT FELLOWSHIPS. The Richard U. Light Fellowships at Yale support language study at approved sites in East Asia for a summer, term or academic year. Lindsay Fellowships for Research in Africa, which fund summer research designed to increase the understanding of Africa, were awarded to Mirinda Gillespie '03 of Morse College, Joshua Griggs '03 of Morse College, Renee Reynolds '03 of Pierson College and Theresa Silla '02 of Saybrook College.

LUCE SCHOLARS PROGRAM. The Luce Scholars Program provides one-year internships in Asia for graduates with no significant experience in Asia or Asian studies. Valerie Karplus '02 of Calhoun College will intern in agricultural biotechnology as part of the program.

MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIPS. Marshall Scholarships for two years of study in any discipline, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, at any British University were awarded to Zachary Kaufman '00, who will pursue an M.Phil. in international relations at Oxford; Jennifer Nou '02 of Calhoun College, who will pursue an M.Phil. in politics at Oxford; and Krishanti Vignarajah '01, who will pursue an M.Phil. in development studies at Oxford.

MASTERCARD GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP. The MasterCard Graduate Scholarship Award for graduating varsity college golfers who plan to continue their education in accredited post-graduate programs was given to Jennifer Schriefer '02 of Davenport College.

ANDREW W. MELLON FELLOWSHIPS. Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies, which supports the first year of graduate study at any U.S. or Canadian graduate school, were awarded to one senior: Heather Farkas of Saybrook College; and nine alumni: Ian Blecher '00; Melissa Eppihimer '01; Christine Evans '00; Nicholas Fleisher '01; Megan Luke '99; Siobhan Peiffer '99; Victoria Sancho '98; Carla Serpell '01; and Benjamin Soskis '98.

PAUL MELLON FELLOWSHIP. The 2002 Paul Mellon Fellowship from Yale to Clare College, Cambridge, was awarded to Polly Ha '02 of Calhoun College. She will pursue a M.Phil. in historical studies at Clare College.

NATIONAL DEFENSE FELLOWSHIP. A National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship supporting three years of graduate study in science, mathematics or engineering was awarded to Jeffrey Wilbur '02 of Morse College.

NIH-UNIVERSITY PARTNERS SCHOLARSHIP. A National Institutes of Health-University Partners Scholarship supporting a collaborative doctoral program in biomedical research was awarded to Stephanie Manson '02 of Pierson College, who will pursue a D.Phil. in biomedical sciences at Oxford University.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships supporting three years of graduate study in science, social sciences, mathematics or engineering were awarded to two seniors: Jason Arroyo of Branford College and Mary Ellen Matyskiela of Morse College; and to 11 alumni: Carol Anderson '95; Laura Chamberlain '99; Anders Corr '01; Saskia deVries '98; Sarah Hollinshead '99; Jesse Hwang '01; Anne Lightbody '99; James McGuire '01; Derek Paley '97; Sarah Parcak '01; and Sarah Reed '99.

NIARCHOS FELLOWSHIPS. Stavros S. Niarchos Language Study Fellowships provide funding to study the modern Greek language. This year's recipients are Monica Jimenez '02 of Silliman College, Michael Ellis '03 of Branford College, BriAnne Shaw '02 of Ezra Stiles College, James Sumner '03 of Silliman College, Ann Sun '02 of Saybrook College and Vanessa Janowski '04 of Jonathan Edwards College.

NORTON FELLOWSHIPS. Edward Norton Fellowships, which fund research focusing on the countries of the Middle East or the Central Asian countries of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan, were awarded to Mahbod Moghadam '03 of Calhoun College, Jill Schnoebelen '02 of Branford College, James Sumner '03 of Silliman College and Karen Weise '03 of Pierson College.

PERLROTH PRIZES. Tristan Perlroth Prizes are awarded for summer travel outside the United States to enhance students' understanding of foreign culture and/or international relations. Rhodes Scholarships for two years of study at Oxford University were awarded to Shayna Strom '02 of Davenport College, who will pursue a D.Phil. in human geography; and Sunita Puri '02 of Davenport College, who will pursue an M.Phil. in cultural anthropology and development studies.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships supporting a year of study abroad were awarded to Vanessa Janowski '04 of Jonathan Edwards College, who will spend her junior year in Italy at the University of Salerno; and to Elizabeth Morrison '02 of Calhoun College, who will pursue an M.Phil. in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge.

RUSTGI FELLOWSHIPS. Rustgi Fellowships providing support for research or internships in India or South Asia were awarded to Lisa Gross '04 of Silliman College and William Parish '04 of Morse College.

SAPIR PRIZE. The Edward Sapir Prize for the best senior essay in anthropology was awarded to Sarah Caldwell of Timothy Dwight College for her essay titled "Genealogies of Change: Tradition and History in Negotiations of Political Change in the Royal Bafokeng Nation." Honorable mentions were given to Cindy Im of Saybrook College for "Life With the Virus: The 'Multiply-Burdened Woman' and the Psychosocial Impact of Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy on Risk Behavior"; Sunita Puri of Davenport College for "Immigration, Isolation and (Community) Identity: An Ethnographic Look at Domestic Violence Among South Asian Immigrants in England and the United States"; and Catherine Wetmore of Jonathan Edwards College for "Reflections of Social Organization and Everyday Cultural Practices: An Analysis of Shell Artifacts Excavated from the Classic Maya Center of Aguateca."

SHARE AND CARE FOUNDATION GRANTS. Share and Care Foundation Grants provide support for summer research projects or internships in South Asia with organizations trying to effect social change through education, empowerment or training. This year's recipients are Ruchika Budhraja '03 of Ezra Stiles College and William Parish '04 of Morse College.

SOUTHEAST ASIA STUDIES GRANTS. Southeast Asia Studies Grants support research for students with a demonstrated commitment to the field of Southeast Asia studies. This year's recipients are David Corson-Knowles '03 of Trumbull College, Alyssa Greenwald '03 of Jonathan Edwards College, Tiffany Pham '03 of Saybrook College and Shoshana Woo '03 of Morse College.

SUMMER RESEARCH IN EAST ASIA TRAVEL GRANTS. Summer Research in East Asia Travel Grants are awarded to Yale College students to support research in East Asia in any discipline. The award recipients are: Xin Dong '03 of Trumbull College, for study of ancient Chinese orthography and the development of the Chinese language; Lily Han '03 of Berkeley College, for research on the relationship between grassroots democracy and rule of law in China; and Daniel Kim '03 of Silliman College, for research on Hong Kong triad groups.

SUNRISE FOUNDATION GRANTS. Sunrise Foundation Travel and Research Grants providing support for a semester abroad or summer research abroad in an "emerging market" country were awarded to Daniel Kurtz-Phelan '03 of Berkeley College, Catherine Pitt '04 of Morse College and Andrea Wolf '03 of Jonathan Edwards College.

TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship, which supports up to four years of university study (i.e., senior year of college and one to three years of graduate school) for students planning careers in public service, was awarded to Chiraag Bains '03 of Morse College.

UDALL SCHOLARSHIPS. Morris K. Udall Scholarships, which support a year of undergraduate study for students with a commitment to environmental issues, were awarded to Noah Chesnin '04 of Berkeley College, David Corson-Knowles '03 of Trumbull College and Andrew Klaber '04 of Trumbull College.

VAN SINDEREN PRIZES. Four students received Adrian Van Sinderen Prizes for Book Collecting. The prizes were established in 1957 by the late Adrian Van Sinderen '10 B.A. to encourage undergraduates to collect books, to build up their own libraries and to read for both pleasure and education. The Senior Prize ($750) was awarded to Eugenie Brinkema of Saybrook College for her collection of film criticism and theory; a Senior Honorable Mention Prize ($400) was given to Oana Marian of Pierson College for her collection of Anglo-Irish poetry. The Sophomore Prize ($500) was awarded to Samantha Culp of Timothy Dwight College for her collection of 20th-century western arts and culture; a Sophomore Honorable Mention Prize ($250) was awarded to Strand Conover of Davenport College for his collection on boxing.

WILLIAMS PRIZES. The Williams Prize is awarded each year to undergraduates in any department for an outstanding paper completed during the academic year on a subject matter related to China, Japan or Korea. This year's recipients are: Maria Ham '02 of Saybrook College, for "Identity Crisis in Time of War: The Formation of a Korean National Identity in Hawaii during World War II"; Krissa Lanham '02 of Davenport College, for "An Everlasting Plague: Diplomatic and Missionary Reactions to the Fuzhou Anti-Missionary Riot of 1878"; David Pozen '02 of Trumbull College, for "A Revolution from Within: Revolution and Subjectivity in Osamu Dazai's 'The Setting Sun'"; Ruddy Wang '02 of Silliman College, for "Behind the Painted Screen: Dreams and Absence in Chinese Lyric Poetry"; and Julie Wilensky '02 of Saybrook College, for "The Magical Kunlun and 'Devil Slaves': Chinese Perceptions of Dark-skinned People and Africa before 1500."

WREXHAM PRIZES. The Wrexham Prize "for the best senior essay in the field of the humanities" was awarded to Noah Duke Kaye of Calhoun College for his essay "Towards a Modern Integration: Systems of Care and the Federal Role in Children's Mental Health." The Wrexham Prize "for the best senior essay or other substantial piece of writing in the field of the social sciences" was awarded to Sarah Jane Caldwell of Timothy Dwight College for her essay "Genealogies of Change: Tradition and History in Negotiations of Political Change in the Royal Bafokeng Nation."

YALE-CHINA ESSAY PRIZE. The 2002 Yale-China Essay Prize was awarded to Julie Wilensky '02 of Saybrook College for her essay "The Magical Kunlun and 'Devil Slaves': Chinese Perceptions of Dark-skinned People and Africa before 1500."

YALE-CHINA FELLOWSHIPS. Yale-China Fellowships supporting two years of teaching English at universities and secondary schools in China were awarded to six seniors: Carissa Dizon of Jonathan Edwards College; Alonzo Emery of Davenport College; Jonathan Greene of Saybrook College; Cindy Hwang of Timothy Dwight College; Emily Hyde of Jonathan Edwards College; and Aaron Lichtig of Jonathan Edwards College.
