City's downtown will heat up
with 'hot sounds' this summer

Some "hot sounds" will come to New Haven this summer in a new series of free concerts on the city's Green.

The series, titled "Hot Sounds in the City," will bring blues, Latin music and classic rock and soul to the downtown for three free Saturday night concerts -- July 20, 27 and August 3. It also features a July 19 ticketed event at the Shubert Theatre as part of a Blues and Roots Fest. Cosponsored by Yale and several other area institutions, "Hot Sounds in the City" is produced by Market New Haven, Inc. (MNHI), a nonprofit marketing organization formed two years ago with funding from Yale, the city and the business community.

The concert lineup is as follows:

July 20 -- Etta James, the Grammy Award-winning singer known as "the mother of all blues." Opening her act will be Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas and The Fairfield Four.

July 27 -- A "Latin Fusion" program featuring Panamanian singer Rubén Blades and the Editus Ensemble as the headliner, with Hector Bonet as the opening act.

Aug. 3 -- A program of classic rock and soul featuring Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famer Wilson Pickett as the headline act and the group War as the opening act.

The Blues and Roots Fest at the Shubert Theatre on July 19 will feature Keb' Mo', a two-time Grammy Award-winning blues musician, as the main event and The James Cotton Band as the opening act.

At a news conference announcing "Hot Sounds in the City," Bruce Alexander, vice president of Yale and director of the Office of New Haven and State Affairs, outlined the important economic development role the collaboration between Yale, the city and local businesses plays in the city.

"In less than two years, this dynamic trio has helped shape the city's revival through advertising campaigns highlighting the myriad of great things New Haven has to offer, by enticing thousands of people downtown through retail promotions and major events on the Green, and by sharing the city's good news with local, regional and national media," he said. "We should all be very proud of the work of the staff of Market New Haven, Inc."

Robin Wadsworth, MNHI events ,coordinator, said this year's Blues and Roots Fest may be the groundwork for a possible new festival in the city. The event is produced in association with International Artists Initiative and could help draw concert-goers for overnight stays in the city, she said. Tickets for the Blues and Roots Fest's opening performance at the Shubert can be purchased by calling the theater's box office at (203) 562-5666.

In addition to the concerts, MNHI will again produce "Cool Friday Flicks on the Green" each week from July 12 through Aug. 23. This summer's films are: "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (July 12), "Singin' in the Rain" (July 19), "Casablanca" (July 26), "Rear Window" (Aug. 2), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (Aug. 9), "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (Aug. 16) and a special Film Fest New Haven presentation of a Sacco and Vanzetti documentary (Aug. 23). All films will be shown after sundown on a big screen on the New Haven Green.

In addition to Yale and the City of New Haven, other supporters of Market New Haven, Inc. are the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Bayer Corporation, SBC/SNET, United Illuminating, New Haven Savings Bank and the Town Green Special Services District. The New Haven Register is the official print media sponsor and CT Ultra Radio, downtown's new online radio station, is a promotional partner for the "Hot Sounds in the City" summer concert series.
