Tax notice

The University Tax Department has issued a notice to new international students, scholars, faculty members and other visitors who will receive payments, including stipends, fellowships or wages, through the University payroll system.

Individuals who are in these categories are required to meet with the Tax Department prior to receiving any such payments.

At the meeting a member of the department will review the individual's tax status to determine proper tax withholding, including whether the individual is eligible to claim a reduced income tax withholding rate pursuant to a tax treaty and/or is exempt from FICA withholding. International students and scholars under the University's immigration sponsorship have been notified of this service and have been instructed to contact the Tax Department upon their arrival at the University to schedule an appointment. For more information, visit the website at www.yale.edu/tax/int.

Due to the high volume of appointments at the beginning of each semester, the department administrator may wish to schedule an appointment for an individual in advance, or remind the individual of this University service. If an individual has not been set up on the payroll system prior to meeting with the Tax Department, the individual will need to provide documentation from the department regarding the individual's position (e.g., postdoctoral fellow, postdoctoral associate, etc.) and type of payment (e.g., stipend, fellowship, wage) at the appointment.

To schedule an appointment, call (203) 432-5530 or (203) 432-5597, or send e-mail to Jodie.Stewart-Moore@yale.edu or Daysi.Cardona@yale.edu. If an individual cannot make the scheduled appointment, which lasts approximately 20 minutes, he or she should notify the department immediately. During the months of July, August and September, appointments will be held Monday-Thursday, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
