W. Mark Saltzman

W. Mark Saltzman to teach as
Goizueta Foundation Professor

W. Mark Saltzman, who joins the Yale faculty July 1 as the Goizueta Foundation Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, has focused his work on tissue engineering and developing better methods for drug delivery.

Through this research, Saltzman aspires to create safer and more effective medical and surgical therapy.

Saltzman comes to Yale from Cornell University, where he has taught since 1996 and was the BP Amoco/H. Laurance Fuller Professor of Chemical Engineering since 2001. In his laboratory at Cornell, Saltzman developed technology, based on the use of biocompatible polymeric materials, for the controlled delivery of drugs, proteins and genes. He and his team also developed new polymeric materials that influence the growth and assembly of tissues. This includes the development of polymer implants to promote the regeneration of diseased and traumatized tissues in the nervous system and to enhance the survival of transplanted cells and tissues. His research could lead to better treatments for cancer, brain diseases and the prevention of infectious diseases.

Saltzman is the author of the book "Drug Delivery: Engineering Principles for Drug Therapy" and of another book in preparation, titled "Tissue Engineering: Engineering principles for the design of replacement organs and tissues." His more than 100 scientific articles have appeared in numerous scientific journals and publications.

A graduate of Iowa State University, Saltzman earned his master's and doctoral degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he also did postdoctoral work. In 1987, he joined the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor. He was promoted to a full professorship in 1995. He held a joint appointment in biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1990 until his appointment at Cornell. At Johns Hopkins, he was honored with a Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education and a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Teacher-Scholar Award. He was similarly honored at Cornell with the Richard Tucker Excellence in Teaching Award. His other honors have included a 2001 NYSTAR Award from the Faculty Development Program, a 2000 Professional Progress in Engineering Award from Iowa State University, a 1996 Controlled Release Society Young Investigator Award and the 1995 Allan C. Davis Medal, given to Maryland's "Outstanding Young Engineer."

Saltzman was a Britton Chance Distinguished Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000 and has been a member of the Surgery & Bioengineering Study Section of the National Institutes of Health since 1999. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
