Yale will proceed with Tercentennial celebration

The University has announced that it will proceed with all the Tercentennial events scheduled for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 5-7, including the gathering in the Yale Bowl for the show titled "For God, for Country, and for Yale."

The weekend will also feature a symposium on Oct. 5-6, a Convocation on Cross Campus on Oct. 5 and the University's first Sunday football game on Oct. 7.

Among the speakers will be Yale alumni former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former President of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo.

University Secretary and Vice President Linda Koch Lorimer said the decision to proceed with the Tercentennial celebration in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks followed consultations with faculty, students and staff. She said the University administration also received numerous e-mail messages from members of the community in response to a request from President Richard C. Levin for comments and ideas.

"There was a remarkable consensus that all of the events planned for Yale's Tercentennial weekend should proceed," Lorimer said. She noted that one faculty member wrote, "I urge Yale to go ahead; the ability to keep the norm eventually replenishes the energy and drive that otherwise gets drained by traumatic events."

Lorimer said that a number of suggestions would be adopted to reinforce the Oct. 5 show at the Yale Bowl as a way for the campus to come together as a community. The show will feature student and alumni musicians and singers. Among the alumni who will participate are Sam Waterston, Tom Wolfe and Calvin Hill. A commemorative fireworks display will conclude the program. The 7 p.m. show will be preceded by exhibits, activities and performances on the grounds around the Yale Bowl beginning at 4:30 p.m. There will also be a variety of food items for sale.

The Tercentennial website is the source of up-to-date information on the Tercentennial weekend schedule and tickets. The administration will also continue to provide updates to the Yale community via e-mail.
