Trumbull Lecture will examine
1828 treatise on liberal education

A pamphlet written in 1828 that is ,considered one of the most influential documents produced at Yale during the University's first three centuries will be the subject of the Trumbull Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

David P. Potts, a professor of history at Yale, will present the lecture, titled "For Liberal Learning: Yale Voices from 1828," at 4 p.m. in the faculty lounge of Connecticut Hall, 344 College St. The event is free and open to the public.

Potts will examine the 1828 Reports on the Course of Study, which was put together by the Yale College faculty and the Corporation. The pamphlet, a classic treatise on the ends and means of liberal education, shaped the discourse on collegiate content, pedagogy and purpose. Potts will discuss the text and its historical context, as well as how it relates to issues confronting liberal education today.

A leading historian of American higher education, Potts has devoted equal segments of his career to teaching American history, providing support to three faculties as academic dean and producing historical studies of American colleges.

Potts' lecture is sponsored by the University Secretary's Office, the Department of History and the Teachers Preparation Program.
