J. Lloyd Suttle is appointed deputy provost

J. Lloyd Suttle, associate provost since 1987, has been promoted to the post of deputy provost for undergraduate and graduate programs, Provost Alison F. Richard has announced.

"For over 25 years and in various capacities, Lloyd has served the University faithfully and well," said Richard. "A Yale alumnus with both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University, Lloyd has demonstrated a special sensitivity to the need of students, an appreciation of the scope of Yale's academic mission and a deep understanding of how this institution works. His appointment as deputy provost acknowledges Lloyd's important contributions overseeing such a vital area of campus life."

In the Provost's Office, Suttle has oversight of Yale College, the Graduate School, University Libraries, the Office of Summer Programs, Conference Services, Information Technology Services, the Department of Athletics, and Student Financial and Administrative Systems. He also is responsible for undergraduate programs in humanities, film studies and theater studies, as well as the Council of Masters. Additionally, his responsibilities include facilities planning and capital budgeting, space allocations and student support services, among others.

During his years in the Provost's Office, Suttle also served as adviser to Yale Presidents Howard Lamar and Richard C. Levin 1992-1994. Prior to joining the Provost's Office, he was dean of administrative and student affairs in Yale College 1982-1987. His previous experience includes working for the Office of Institutional Research as director (1977-1982), associate director (1975-1977) and assistant director (1973-1975).

As a lecturer at the School of Management 1976-1979, Suttle taught courses on individual and group behavior in work organizations. From 1973 to 1976 he was the author and editor of the "Quality of Employment" monograph series.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Suttle holds three Yale degrees: B.S., 1969; M.Phil., 1973; and Ph.D., 1975.
