Famed Westminster Cathedral Choir to make an appearance in Woolsey Hall
The choir of Westminster Cathedral of London, considered to be one of the finest choirs of men and boys in the world, will perform on Monday, Oct. 22, in Woolsey Hall as part of its 2001 tour of the United States.
The performance, presented by the Institute of Sacred Music with support from the Trinity Choir of Men and Boys, will begin at 8 p.m. The program will feature works by Bach, Palestrina, Mendelssohn and contemporary British composer James MacMillan.
The award-winning Westminster Cathedral Choir was established as part of the original vision of the cathedral's founder, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, then Archbishop of Westminster. He laid great emphasis on the beauty and quality of the new cathedral's liturgy and music and began a residential choir school for the boy choristers. Daily sung masses and offices were established when the cathedral opened in 1903 and have continued without interruption ever since.
The choir has earned a reputation for reviving works not heard for centuries, as well as for performing newly commissioned musical pieces. It was among the first choirs in Britain to make recordings; its first acoustic recording was in 1908. More recently, its recordings on the Hyperion label have won awards from all over the world. In 1998 the choir's recording of Frank Martin's "Mass for Double Choir" and Pizzetti's "Requiem" won the Gramophone Awards for both the "Best Choral Recording of the Year" and the prestigious "Record of the Year," making it the only cathedral choir ever to have won in either category.
The Westminster Cathedral Choir's U.S. tour is under the direction of Martin Baker, with organist Robert Quinney. It includes engagements in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and St. Louis, in addition to New Haven.
Tickets for the performance range from $10 to $35 and are available from the New Haven Symphony box office by calling (800) 292-NHSO. Tickets can also be ordered online at www.newhavensymphony.com.
