to address Sept. 11

Janet L. Robinson, president and general manager of The New York Times, will discuss "The New York Times ... Sept. 11 and Beyond" during a visit to campus on Tuesday, Oct. 16, as a Gordon Grand Fellow.

Her lecture will take place during a tea at 4 p.m. in the Saybrook College master's house, 90 High St. The event is free and open to the public.

Robinson is also senior vice president of newspaper operations for The New York Times Company, a post she has held since February of this year. She has been president and general manager of The New York Times newspaper since 1996.

From 1995 until earlier this year, Robinson was senior vice president of advertising, with responsibility for overall advertising sales at The New York Times. Before that, she served as vice president and director of advertising.

Prior to joining the newspaper, Robinson was group senior vice president for the advertising sales and marketing unit of The New York Times Company Women's Magazine Group (which has since been sold) and earlier served as vice president of the group.

Earlier in her career, Robinson was a public school teacher in Newport, Rhode Island, and Somerset, Massachusetts, before joining The Times Company in 1983.

Robinson was recognized in the September 1999 issue of Crain's New York Business as one of the "100 Most Influential Women in Business." She received New York University's 1999 Prism Award for outstanding leadership in the graphic arts industry and in 1998 was inducted into the YWCA's Academy of Women Achievers, which celebrates the accomplishments of the nation's most outstanding professional women. In 1998 she received the New York Women in Communications, Inc. Matrix Award for women who have distinguished themselves in the communications field. She was named by Advertising Age in 1997 as one of "25 Women to Watch" among the most prominent women in advertising, marketing and media. Her other honors include Frohlinger's Marketing Report Award as the "Outstanding Newspaper Executive of 1994," which recognizes excellence in marketing, advertising and business.

A member of The Ad Club of New York, Advertising Women of New York and New York Women in Communications, Robinson was chair of the board of directors of the American Advertising Federation for 1999. She also serves on the boards of the Audit Bureau of Circulation, The Advertising Council and the Fashion Institute of Technology, as well as the Presidential Board of Trustees of her alma mater, Salve Regina University. She is a member of the Leadership Committee for The Lincoln Center Consolidated Corporate Fund.

The Gordon Grand Fellowship at Yale promotes dialogue and understanding between today's business leaders and students at Yale. The fellowship was established in 1973 to honor Gordon Grand, a graduate of the Yale College Class of 1938, and president and chief executive officer of the Olin Corporation. During his lifetime, Grand endeavored to bridge the gap between business and academia by actively promoting the exchange of ideas and viewpoints between these sectors. Today, the Gordon Grand Fellowship continues this tradition by inviting prominent business leaders to Yale for one- to three-day visits.
