David Brooks, senior editor at The Weekly Standard and a contributing editor at Newsweek, will visit the campus on Wednesday, Oct. 24, as the academic year's first Poynter Fellow in Journalism. (See related story.)
He will speak on the topic "United We Stand? Post-Attack America" at 4 p.m. in Levinson Auditorium of the Law School, 127 Wall St. All are invited to attend.
Brooks also is a commentator on "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" and a frequent analyst on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and the "Diane Rehm Show." His articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Forbes, the Washington Post, The Times Literary Supplement, Commentary, The Public Interest and many other publications. Among his recent articles is "The Organization Kid," a look at college students today that was published in The Atlantic Monthly in April.
In his popular book "Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There," published last year, Brooks coins the phrase "bourgeois bohemians" -- which he abbreviates to "bobos" -- to describe the American elite of the Information Age. "These are the highly educated folk who have one foot in the bohemian world of creativity and another foot in the bourgeois realm of ambition and worldly success," he explained on C-Span's "Booknotes." Brooks also is editor of the anthology "Backward and Upward: The New Conservative Writing."
Brooks joined The Weekly Standard at its inception in 1995. He previously worked for nine years at The Wall Street Journal, where he was an op-ed editor and earlier was posted in Brussels covering Russia, the Middle East, South Africa and European affairs. His first post at the Journal was as editor of the book review section, and he filled in for five months as the newspaper's movie critic.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Brooks worked earlier in his career as a police reporter for the City News Bureau, a wire service owned jointly by the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times.
