Yale Opera students to perform scenes from famous operas
In their first production of the year, students in Yale's opera program will present scenes from famous operas that have been staged by award-winning British-born director Colin Graham, who, in turn, will lead them in their musical dramatizations.
The productions will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. Tickets are $8; $5 for students.
All of the roles will be sung by young artists in the School of Music's opera program, considered one of the finest in the country. Doris Yarick-Cross is the artistic director of Yale Opera.
Graham has directed more than 400 productions around the world. Early in his career he began a long association with composer Benjamin Britten, for whom he directed many world premieres. He became artistic director of Britten's English Opera Group and its successor, the English Music Theatre, a company devoted to music theater development and performer versatility. Additionally, Graham served as artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival for many years, as well as director of productions of Sadler's Wells Opera/English National Opera.
Currently the artistic director for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Graham has worked with the Washington, Minnesota, Omaha, San Diego, Boston and New York Operas, and spent nine summers working with the Sante Fe Opera. Among his recent world premieres are Corigliano's "The Ghosts of Versailles" for the Metropolitan Opera; Bright Sheng's "The Song of Majnun" for Lyric Opera of Chicago; Conrad Suza's "The Dangerous Liaisons" for the San Francisco Opera; Paulus' "Woman at Otowi Crossing" for Opera Theatre of St. Louis; and Andre Previn's "A Streetcar Named Desire," also for San Francisco. The latter was seen on public television last December.
Graham's new production of Britten's "A Death in Venice" for the Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera, Covent Garden (for which he also designed settings), was chosen by The New York Times and New York Magazine as production of the year and was nominated for an Olivier Award in London. Graham is now at work on the libretto for Previn's next opera.
