Honoring an 'unsung hero'
In a ceremony at the Peabody Museum of Natural History, Connecticut's Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz dedicated the 2001 edition of the State Register & Manual to the late Hiram Bingham IV, a member of the Yale Class of 1925 and former U.S. diplomat. In attendance were Bingham's sons (from left) Robert "Tim" Bingham, David Bingham, John Bingham and William Bingham. Hiram Bingham IV, who was U.S. vice counsel in Marseilles, France, is credited with saving the lives of over 2,000 people, mostly Jewish, during World War II by issuing false visas. Bysiewicz called him an "unsung hero of Connecticut history." Hiram Bingham IV is the son of the famous Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham III, who discovered Machu Picchu and later became governor of Connecticut.
