'Public service in Hong Kong'
to be highlighted in symposium

Students who are visiting the campus as part of the Yale University-New Asia College Exchange will talk about "Public Service in Hong Kong" at a symposium being held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in Rm. 119 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.

The eight students from New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong arrived at Yale on Jan. 25 for a two-week stay. They are being hosted by their Yale counterparts in the exchange program, who will visit the Chinese university during spring break.

The Yale University-New Asia College Exchange aims to promote interaction and learning between the U.S. and Chinese participants through the exploration of such fields as government, education and the media, as well as issues such as homelessness, national security and the environment.

The Yale students have spent months planning various activities designed to offer the Chinese scholars a broad, yet in-depth, look at concept of public service in the United States. In addition to exploring the University and the city of New Haven, the New Asia students will take overnight trips to Boston and New York City, where they will learn about a range of public service organizations.

At the symposium marking the end of their stay in New Haven, the New Asia students will describe how various issues, such as housing and education, have been affected by people's perceptions of public service in the region. The event is free and open to the public. It will be preceded by a reception for Yale community members at 3:15 p.m. in the same location.

The Yale participants in the exchange program will learn about public service in Hong Kong and deliver their own presentations on public service in the United States when they visit the Chinese University of Hong Kong in March. The eight Yale students taking part in this year's exchange are: William Cruz '05 and Emma Pollack-Pelzner '04 of Calhoun College, Samantha Culp '04 of Timothy Dwight College; Michelle Desaram '05, Timothy Kleiman '04 and Gabrielle Tiven '04 of Saybrook Colege; Lori Flores '05 of Branford College; and William Parish '04 of Morse College.

Now in its 10th year, the Yale University-New Asia College Exchange Program is sponsored by the Yale-China Association with funding from the Council on East Asian Studies, part of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies. Since its founding in 1901, the Yale-China Association has helped forge deep and enduring relations between Chinese and Americans.

For more information about the program, contact Argo Caminis at (203) 432-0850 or visiting the Yale-China Association's website at www.yalechina.org/. For more information about the symposium, contact Gabrielle Tiven at gabrielle.tiven@yale.edu or Samantha Culp at samantha.culp@yale.edu.
