Yale experts offer insights on ethical globalization

Mary Robinson, former high commissioner for human rights at the United Nations and former president of Ireland, joined scholars and human rights experts at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization on Jan. 15 for a brainstorming session on her new initiative on ethical globalization.

At the invitation of the center's director, Ernesto Zedillo, members of the Yale faculty from a wide range of departments and professional schools gathered in the parlor of the renovated Betts House to help Robinson and her colleagues from the Ethical Globalization Initiative (EGI) more clearly define the mission of the initiative and identify and prioritize next steps for effective action.

The EGI was created with the goal of integrating human rights into efforts to shape a more ethical globalization. The ultimate goal is to find ways to give voice to those who have previously been unable to participate in the benefits of the global economy.

Included in the group from Yale were Deans James Gustave Speth and Michael Merson representing the Schools of Forestry & Environmental Studies and of Epidemiology & Public Health, respectively. Also on hand were faculty from the Law and Divinity Schools, as well as from the Departments of Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Economics, History and Political Science. Special guests included Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia University and Drusilla Brown from Tufts.

Questions were raised about the very pairing of the word "ethical" with "globalization." Other issues, such as trade, market forces, privatization, political processes, diseases and the environment were used to highlight aspects of globalization that affect the rights of individuals and their feelings of inclusion, or exclusion, in global processes. Portions of the transcript of the meeting are available in the center's online magazine, YaleGlobal, at www.yaleglobal.yale.edu.

The Yale Center for the Study of Globalization will organize similar events over the course of the semester to "brainstorm" about issues that are part of its agenda, such as global public goods, international migration and specific trade topics emerging from an international Task Force on Trade and Finance headed by Zedillo that is part of the Millennium Development Project directed by Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University.

The Yale Center for the Study of Globalization is devoted to examining the impact of our increasingly integrated world on individuals, communities and nations. It is particularly focused on practical policies to enable the world's poorest and weakest citizens to share in its benefits.
