Andrew Heyward

News executive to discuss
impact of 'One Hand Zapping'

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism will present "One Hand Zapping: How You Are Changing Television News and Why You Should Care," a lecture by Andrew Heyward, president of CBS News, on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Heyward's talk, which is the annual Gary Fryer Memorial Lecture, will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Rm. 102 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St. The event is free and open to the public.

Heyward has been president of CBS News since January 1996, making his the second-longest tenure of any president in the news division's 44-year history. (Richard Salant ranks first.)

Since Heyward was named president, two CBS News programs were added to the network's schedule -- "60 Minutes II" and the "Saturday Early Show"; CBS News' weekday morning broadcast was re-launched as "The Early Show"; the flagship "CBS Evening News" was heralded for its rededication to hard-news coverage; and "Face the Nation" and "CBS News Sunday Morning" experienced significant audience and demographic growth. In addition, CBS Radio News was extensively revised, winning industry accolades, and CBS Newspath, the world's largest satellite newsgathering system and the division's 24-hour news service, launched Newspath Now, a digital news-delivery system for local news producers. CBS News, along with ABC News and Fox News, created Network News Service (NNS), a cooperative which serves the networks' affiliates. In addition, CBS News began producing news for other units of Viacom, including the "BET Nightly News," and is creating a diverse mix of programming for domestic and international markets.

Heyward also played a key role in establishing the financial news website CBS MarketWatch, as well as CBS News' own site, cbsnews.com. CBS News also became the exclusive network news provider to America Online, the leading online service.

Heyward began his career at CBS in 1976, working as a writer for a network-owned television station in New York. He went on to become a senior producer for such shows as the CBS News magazine "Eye to Eye" and "CBS News with Dan Rather." He also developed and launched the award-winning show "48 Hours." Before his promotion to president, Heyward was executive producer of "CBS Evening News" and vice president of CBS News. During his career, he has won 12 national Emmy Awards.

The annual Fryer Lecture honors the late Gary G. Fryer, who served as Yale's director of public affairs and special assistant to the president, and also directed the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism, from 1994 until his death in 1997.

The Poynter Fellowship was established by Nelson Poynter (Yale, M.A. 1927). The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. During their stay on campus, Poynter Fellows usually meet with students and present a public talk. The program also sponsors conferences and symposiums on a wide range of topics.
