A fair to remember

One day every spring, New Haven schoolchildren, teachers and parents converge on University Commons for a science fair featuring projects created by the students.

This year's Olin-Yale-Bayer-New Haven Public Schools Science Fair, held March 11, was dedicated to the late Robert Apfel, professor of mechanical engineering and former chair of the Yale Council of Engineering.

Apfel, a co-founder of the fair nine years ago, was an active member of the steering committee up until his death in August.

Established in 1993, the science fair gives students from kindergarten to 12th grade an opportunity to learn about the scientific process and hone their skills in critical thinking and communication by carrying out investigative hands-on science projects. Originally based at seven schools, the program has expanded over the years to include nearly all schools in the public school system.

More than 160 mentors worked with the students who competed in the March 11 fair. They included engineering graduate students Sven Ude and Jaimee Don.

This year's fair featured 118 science projects by about 1,000 students from 40 schools in the city. For the first time, four schools sent pre-K students with exhibits, further expanding the scope of the fair.

The day-long event, sponsored by Yale Engineering faculty, included judging of entries in the morning, followed by an opportunity for the public to view the exhibits.

That evening, at a ceremony in Battell Chapel, Apfel's former graduate student, Rene Williams, spoke about the Yale scientist's inspired mentoring and his vital role in the fair. Prizes were also awarded to outstanding projects.

This year, parents who attended awards night were offered rides to and from Battell Chapel on electric trolleys. The Greater New Haven Transit District/Clean Cities and the City of New Haven provided the service to promote awareness about the fact that the Elm City is home to New England's first high-tech electric trolleys. The trolleys -- which were secured with $1.2 million in federal funds -- circle State, Chapel and Elm streets, Broadway and the Audubon Arts District Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

In 2001-2002, the New Haven Science Fair Mentor Program received the Presidential Award in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the only K-12 program in the county to receive this prestigious award. Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program/Discovering the Powers of Math and Science is the educational non-profit agency that administers the program.
