Chapel sponsoring conference on issues in the Catholic Church
Saint Thomas More, the Catholic Chapel and Center at Yale University, will sponsor a conference titled "Governance, Accountability and the Future of the Church," Friday-Sunday, March 28-30.
"The conference is timely and relevant," says Bruce Russett, the Dean Acheson Professor of Political Science and chair of the planning committee for the event, "but its focus is far more profound than a simple survey of current events. We will address underlying issues of authority and responsibility from historical, theological and political perspectives, and we have assembled a group of remarkably accomplished academics and theologians."
The keynote address will be delivered on Friday by the Bishop Donald W. Wuerl of Pittsburgh. Other participants include judge Guido Calabresi, the Sterling Professor Emeritus and former dean of the Yale Law School; Kathleen McChesney, director of the U.S. Catholic Bishops' Office of Child and Youth Protection; Francis Oakley, president emeritus of Williams College; James Post, president of the Catholic lay group Voice of the Faithful; Father Tom Reese, editor of the Jesuit magazine America; Margaret Steinfels, former editor of Commonweal magazine; and Peter Steinfels of The New York Times.
Now 65 years old, St. Thomas More has seen a dramatic expansion of its academic programs in just the last two years. It has launched new programs, increased student involvement (nearly one-quarter of Yale students are Catholic), has undertaken a capital campaign and is planning a new student center to be designed by architect Cesar Pelli.
The conference is open to the public for a nominal registration fee. Program and registration information for the conference can be found by calling the chapel at (203) 777-5537 or on its website, www.yale.edu/stm.
