A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, for Georges May, Sterling Professor Emeritus of French and former University provost and Yale College dean, who died on Feb. 28 at the age of 82.
The service will begin at 4 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets. A reception will follow in the McDougal Center, Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.
Professor May helped guide Yale College to coeducation as its dean from 1963 to 1971 and was University provost from 1979 to 1981. A scholar of French literature, he was especially renowned for his work on the French Enlightenment figures Denis Diderot and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Ten years ago, at the age of 72, he was awarded Yale's prestigious William Clyde DeVane Medal for "distinction in lifetime scholarship and undergraduate teaching."
