Service provides information
about cancer and its treatment

Every year, some 18,000 people turn to the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service (CIS) of New England, which is based at the Yale Cancer Center, for free information about the disease and its treatment.

This service is among various programs at the Yale Cancer Center aimed at supporting those with the illness and their family members. (See related story.)

The CIS of New England is one of 14 services across the nation run by the National Cancer Institute. Those who call the service are put in touch with trained cancer information specialists, who have expertise in such areas as cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and clinical studies. Specialists can provide customized information over the telephone as well as send specific information and publications to interested persons through the mail.

The CIS also offers National Cancer Institute publications, as well as information about customized clinical trials, smoking cessation, treatment centers, mammography facilities and other support services.

Individuals seeking cancer information can call the CIS at 1-800-4-CANCER or (203) 865-2655.
