Yale cited for its 'dramatic steps' in internationalization
Yale University has been recognized as having one of the nation's most outstanding initiatives in campus internationalization by NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
In its report released on April 15, "Internationalizing the Campus 2003: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities," NAFSA profiles Yale's "dramatic steps to endow its curriculum, research endeavors, and student body with a more international cast."
"Internationalization efforts on our college campuses are part of the lifeblood of American leadership in the world today," said NAFSA's executive director, Marlene Johnson. "Yale has developed innovative ways to educate our students for a world in which global challenges know few boundaries and cross-cultural knowledge and understanding are essential."
As evidence of Yale's commitment to becoming a global university, the report highlights Yale's increasing percentage of international students on campus, the extension of full need-blind financial aid to international students, the establishment of the Yale Center for Globalization, the work of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS), the Fox International Fellowship Program, the World Fellows Program and the new Yale in the World website (http://world.yale.edu/) that provides user-friendly access to all of Yale's international programs and research.
Yale was one of six institutions selected for this recognition by an advisory committee of international educators, who examined the mission, breadth, commitment and impact of the internationalization efforts at 117 institutions.
Gus Ranis, the Henry Luce Director of the YCIAS and the Frankl Altschul Professor of International Economics, said: "It is deeply gratifying for all of us that NAFSA's Association of International Educators has selected Yale as one of those places 'where international education has been broadly infused across the fabric of the institution.' This is precisely what President Levin had in mind -- moving Yale from a respected national to a truly international institution by means of the innovative thoughts and responsible actions detailed in this 'Profile of Success.'"
