Levin book explores role of a university

President Richard C. Levin explores the challenges and responsibilities facing today's universities in a new book published on April 24 by Yale University Press.

"The Work of the University" comes as Levin is nearing his 10th anniversary as president of Yale, making him the longest-serving of any current Ivy League president.

In essays and speeches, Levin examines what it means to be a world-class university, how the university intersects with local and global communities and why a liberal arts education matters. He also offers recollections of the schools, teachers and traditions that have played an important role in his own life. Drawing on his own experience as an economist, he discusses the competitiveness of American industry, the importance of a global economy and the impact of science on economic growth.
