Alumni to focus on Yale Engineering

"Engineering and Applied Science in Service to Society" is the theme of Spring Assembly LXII, sponsored by the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA).

The twice-yearly AYA assemblies bring over 375 alumni delegates to campus, where they learn about important University issues, attend Yale classes alongside current students, and socialize with their fellow graduates. The assemblies also serve as a forum for alumni to voice their views to Yale's administration and faculty.

This year's Spring Assembly will take place Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26.

The assembly will focus on Yale Engineering, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, in light of the University's commitment to investing $500 million in its science and engineering programs. The weekend will focus both on the contributions that engineers in general make to society and on specific programs at Yale.

Events will include a session on Friday titled "What Is Engineering? Why Engineering at Yale?" The program will feature presentations by Paul Fleury, dean of Yale Engineering, who will describe engineering's relationship to science and technology; Provost Susan Hockfield, who will discuss Yale's increased emphasis on science and engineering and its strategic implications for the future; and three undergraduates, who will talk about why they see engineering as a part of their Yale education. This will be followed by a "fair" of booths highlighting Yale's programs in biomedical, chemical, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering, as well as applied physics.

On Saturday morning, President Richard C. Levin will talk about engineering and applied science at Yale, as well as other University affairs. Following his talk, alumni will tour the campus' teaching and research laboratories, where they will see projects and demonstrations by students and faculty that will range from robots to lasers, computer simulations, solar cars and more.

That afternoon, at a town meeting titled "Technology in a Liberal Education," Fleury will describe his vision for the future of engineering and technology education at Yale.

The weekend will also include the annual Yale Medal Dinner, where alumni who have shown outstanding service to the University will be honored. This year's recipients will be Grant D. Esterling '51, '54 LLB., Joseph C. Fox '38, Rafael Porrata-Doria '77 J.D., Donald F. Scharf '55 and John B. Stevens '37.
