Three members of the Class of 2003 were presented William H. McKim Prizes during Senior Class Day exercises at Yale on March 25.
The McKim Prize is given to a graduating senior (or seniors) majoring in political science, economics, history or a related field, who has shown marked improvement in his or her academic standing in upperclass years and who has made a significant contribution in one or more activities outside the classroom. Dr. Richard Schottenfeld, chair of the Council of Masters Committee on Awards, master of Silliman College and a professor of psychiatry, presented the awards to the seniors.
The three winners and their citations follow.
Annette Saunooke
A young woman who came to Yale from Cheokee, North Carolina, she has been deeply involved with the life of Yale and the life in her residential college. She has been a leader, in her residential college, of the intramural basketball team, and, in Yale College, of the Association of Native Americans at Yale (ANAAY). She helped make the annual April Powwow one of the largest cultural events on the Yale campus. She initially struggled with both her academics and her academic mission but has gone on to develop keen academic interests in the American studies major and conduct impressive research on the problems of traditional diet and differential governmental subsidies among the Pima Indian communities in the U.S. and Mexico.
Adam Schemp
He entered Yale lacking a rigorous secondary school preparation and struggled at first, but he was unwilling to settle for mediocrity. Instead, determined to succeed, he took on the challenges of a selective major, took demanding engineering and science courses to master the issues necessary to pursue his passion for water resource management issues, and achieved an impressive academic record. Outside of the classroom, he was a member of the varsity golf team, excelled as a leader of Davenport intramural athletics, and made a significant contribution, recognized by all of his many friends, to the life and spirit of the residential
college.
Allison Phinney
Her outstanding work as a freshman counselor, her other leadership roles as head master's aide, features editor of the Yale Daily News, and director of the Youth Program at the Yale Chaplain's Office, and her fine scholarship on international law, human rights and social justice are evidence of a remarkable transformation in her academic interests and achievements and contributions outside of the classroom.
