BARRY FELLOWSHIPS. Thomas C. Barry Travel Fellowships, established in 2002, support foreign language and cultural studies at all levels, volunteer or other work, or purposeful travel abroad, in countries outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Awards were made to Niyati Gupta '05 of Davenport College for an internship with a micro-credit non-governmental organization in India, where she will study the financial and social empowerment of women in the community, and Tess Wheelwright '05 of Silliman College for an internship at The Buenos Aires Herald and a comparative study of American and Argentine newspaper journalism.
BEINECKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. A Beinecke Scholarship supporting two years of graduate study in any discipline was awarded to Marisa Knox '04 of Saybrook College.
BILDNER TRAVEL PRIZE. The Albert Bildner Prize supports travel to Latin America or the Caribbean for summer research related to the undergraduate senior essay. This year's recipient is Monique Walton '04 of Calhoun College.
BLANNING FELLOWSHIPS. Wendy E. Blanning Memorial Summer Fellowships were awarded to three students for the pursuit of professional projects made possible only with the fellowship's financial support. The recipients and their projects are: Shagran Hassan '04 of Ezra Stiles College, for an internship with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in New York City; Alim Manji '04 of Ezra Stiles College, for a study of attitudes, beliefs and practices relating to HIV/STIs among adolescents in Leon, Nicaragua; and Marina Miteva '05 of Berkeley College, for work to provide better educational opportunities for students with physical disabilities in Bulgaria.
DAVID L. BOREN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS. Under the National Security Education Program, the U.S. government provides scholarship assistance for overseas study of languages and cultures in regions outside of Western Europe, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. This year, an award was given to Elizabeth Ashamu '06 of Berkeley College for a summer program at the Arabic Language Institute in Morocco.
CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP. A Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship funding one year of engineering, mathematics or science study at the University of Cambridge was awarded to Margaret Ebert '03 of Trumbull College, who will pursue an M.Phil. in biology.
COOKE SCHOLARSHIP. Offered for the first time in 2002, the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholarships support two years of undergraduate study in any discipline. Yale's nominee and winner this year was Magni Hamso '05 of Calhoun College.
COOKE GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP. A Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Fellowship supporting up to six years of graduate study in the U.S. or abroad was awarded to Rachel Alpert '03 of Ezra Stiles College.
ENGINEERING AND APPLIED PHYSICS AWARDS. Graduating seniors received the following awards this year: the Edward O. FOX INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS. The Fox International Fellowships support student exchanges between Yale and the Free University of Berlin, Moscow State University; Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge University; Tokyo University Graduate School; Fudan University in Shanghai, People's Republic of China; Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris; and El Colegio de Mexico to conduct research in economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance or contemporary history. This year's recipients are Michelle Chen '03 of Calhoun College and Victor Corona '03 of Davenport College.
FREEMAN-ASIA AWARD. A Freeman-Asia Award, supporting undergraduate study in East and Southeast Asia, was awarded to Davina Bankole '05 of Jonathan Edwards College, for a summer program in Japan.
FULBRIGHT GRANTS. Thirteen seniors will study or do research abroad as winners of Fulbright Grants. The students and their projects are: Dawn Chan of Silliman College, who will study computer models of neural networks in Switzerland; Justin Chen of Silliman College, who will conduct clinical research on systemic lupus erythematosus in Germany; Michelle Chen of Calhoun College, who will research the dynamics of rural-to-urban migration in China; Najah Farley of Calhoun College, who will conduct research on the women's movement in Morocco; Shari Gottlieb of Pierson College, who will study oral narrative in the Madrid Jewish community in Spain; Sarah Izfar of Morse College, who will study the growing indigenous environmental movement in Morocco; Eva Kaye of Morse College, who will use resources in France to investigate the unique post de-colonization relationship between Senegal and France; Daniel Kim of Silliman College, who will explore the extent and consequences of Chinese organized crime in Italy; Abigail Krasner of Pierson College, who will study the interactions among Jews, Christians and Muslims in Damascus between the years of 661 and 750; Daniel Kurtz-Phelan of Berkeley College, who will study the relationship between grassroots political movements and economic policy in Argentina; Diana Lemly of Calhoun College, who will examine measures to improve the prenatal and postnatal care of HIV-infected African immigrant women in France; and Renee Reynolds of Pierson College, who will investigate the consistent decline in electoral participation among young voters in rural South Africa since 1994.
GANZFRIED TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS. The Ganzfried Family Travel Fellowship provides support for research on all subjects related to communal and religious tolerance and understanding, security and cooperation, natural and economic resources, environmental, scientific and technological collaboration and development, communication, culture, gender, and family in Israel or for academic work elsewhere in the field of Jewish Studies. Joshua Bendor '05 of Ezra Stiles College, Rebekah Emanuel '06 of Ezra Stiles College, Aatif Iqbal '05 of Ezra Stiles College and Erin Scharff '04 of Pierson College were awarded the Ganzfried Family Travel Fellowship.
GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIPS. Gates Cambridge Scholarships, which support up to four years of postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge, were awarded to four seniors: Chiraag Bains of Morse College, Zachary Clopton of Saybrook College, Aaron Gruber of Timothy Dwight College and Elizabeth O'Connor of Silliman College; and to one alumna: Andrea Pizziconi '01 of Pierson College.
GOLDMAN SACHS GLOBAL LEADERS PROGRAM. Michelle de Saram '05 of Saybrook College was one of 16 U.S. students selected as a Goldman Sachs Global Leader for their outstanding academic and leadership achievements and one of the eight U.S. winners chosen to attend the Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute in New York City.
GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are merit-based awards supporting one or two years of study for American undergraduates with demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in the natural sciences and mathematics. David Johnson '04 of Saybrook College, Brian Lehmann '04 of Ezra Stiles College and Doris Du Wang '04 of Jonathan Edwards College were named Goldwater Scholars.
GORDON GRAND FELLOWSHIPS. The Gordon Grand Fellowship is a post-baccalaureate award established by the Council of Masters to honor Gordon Grand Jr. '38. The fellowship supports a year of travel, work or research abroad or in the United States. Three seniors received awards: Keira Cohen of Davenport College, to establish a health training program for young girls in Peru; Lauren Keane of Silliman College, to study national and local approaches to poverty alleviation in Mexico, Ecuador and Chile; and Diana Lemly of Calhoun College, to examine the prenatal and postnatal care of HIV-infected immigrant women in France.
HEINZ GOVERNMENT SERVICE FELLOWSHIPS. Established by the Class of 1960 in honor of the late Senator John Heinz, the Heinz Fellowships support summer internships in federal, state or local government. This year's recipients are two juniors: Rebecca Hunter of Jonathan Edwards College, for an internship with the State Department at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin; and Jonah Schulhofer-Wohl of Trumbull College, for an internship at the U.S. Embassy in either Egypt or Bahrain.
HENRY FELLOWSHIP. The Henry Fellowship is an exchange program between Harvard and Yale universities and Cambridge and Oxford universities. One Henry Fellowship is made available annually for a Yale senior to study at either Oxford or Cambridge. This year's recipient is Aaron Jakes '03 of Trumbull College, who will pursue an M.Phil. program at Oxford in modern Middle Eastern studies and social history.
HOWLAND FELLOWSHIPS. The Charles P. Howland 1891 Fellowship supports study or research abroad for seniors who demonstrate promise of useful activity to improve international relations. Three awards were made: Fasil Amdetsion of Berkeley College for research in Ethiopia focusing on ethnicity in African politics; Garry Ng of Ezra Stiles College, for study of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong and mainland China; and Peter van Agtmael of Pierson College, for a photographic study of the consequences of construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China and for continued study of the Chinese language.
HUANG TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS. Six seniors were awarded Parker Huang Undergraduate Travel Fellowships, which were established by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies, and fund study and travel in the non-English speaking countries of Africa and Asia, as well as countries in Eastern Europe and Latin America. This year, awards were made to five seniors: Adam Chanzit of Timothy Dwight College, to conduct research on contemporary Daoism in China; Ellen Kanner of Jonathan Edwards College, to engage in research and develop educational initiatives at the Regional Program on Bioethics in Chile; James Pearce of Branford College, to investigate the refugee experience in Turkey and to continue study of the Turkish language; Renee Reynolds of Pierson College, to examine the decline in electoral participation among young voters in rural South Africa; and Edward Smith of Branford College, to research the effects of south-north labor migration between southeast Asian nations and Taiwan.
HUGHES FELLOWSHIPS. A Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellowship in the Biological Sciences supporting up to five years of doctoral study was awarded to Margaret S. Ebert '03 of Trumbull College.
HUMANITY IN ACTION FELLOWSHIPS. The Humanity in Action Fellowships support the study of human rights and minority rights in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. HUNTINGTON PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD. A Samuel Huntington Public Service Award supporting a graduating senior in a year-long public service project was awarded to Colleen Kinder '03 of Morse College, for work with the elderly in Cuba.
KAO RESEARCH GRANTS. The Charles Kao Fund provides support for summer research in East and Southeast Asia focusing on the impact of technology transfer processes between Asia and the West, and the social, cultural and political transformations in these regions. This year's winners are Nancy Huynh '04 of Branford College, Ray Parsioan '04 of Morse College and Xiaoning Wu '04 of Timothy Dwight College.
KINGSLEY TRUST ASSOCIATION SUMMER TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS. Established last year in honor of Yale's Tercentennial by the Kingsley Trust Association (also known as the Scroll and Key Society), the fellowships commemorate Yale College graduates who attained distinction in their life's works. This year's recipients are five sophomores: Christopher Huffman of Trumbull College, the A. Bartlett Giamatti Fellowship in European Literature and History, for research on cells in historic prisons and churches in Western Europe and the effects of isolation on prisoners and anchoresses; Brendan Kearney of Ezra Stiles College, the Harvey Cushing Fellowship in Science, for work and research at the St. Joseph's Home for Chronically Sick Children near Cape Town, South Africa; Pablo Landa of Berkeley College, the A. REACH OUT SUMMER FELLOWSHIP. The Reach Out Fellowship program seeks to enrich academic study and foster a sense of global responsibility at Yale by encouraging students to explore the social justice and community service dimension of globalization. Through self-designed fellowships at non-profit organizations in the developing world, students explore these issues first-hand while also furthering the work of the host NGOs and developing the skills they need to work against poverty, environmental degradation, human rights abuses, and injustice internationally. RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS. Rhodes Scholarships for two years of study at Oxford University were awarded to seniors Chesa Boudin of Trumbull College and Prateek Tandon of Pierson College, both of whom will pursue an M.Phil. in development studies.
RICE FOREIGN RESIDENCE FELLOWSHIPS. Established by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies, the Henry Hart Rice Foreign Residence Fellowships support students in the humanities and social sciences for work, research or study in countries that have not been traditional friends and allies of the United States. There was one award this year: Emily Hurstak '03 of Saybrook College, who will work with a bank in India to design a health insurance and pension program for impoverished women.
ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships supporting a year of study abroad were awarded to Van Nguyen '03 of Morse College, for study in Australia; and Lauren Johns '04 of Ezra Stiles College for study in Italy.
RUSTGI FELLOWSHIPS. Rustgi Fellowships provide support for research or internships in India or South Asia. Mahesh Balakrishnan '05 of Silliman College and Vibhuti Jain '04 of Branford College were awarded fellowships.
SANDERS FELLOWSHIP. New this year, the Stacey Sanders Summer Fellowship offers an opportunity for an underclassman to spend the summer months pursuing formal study, an internship or an independent project abroad. The award went to Jennifer Gardner '05 of Ezra Stiles, who will conduct research on the importance of Tolstoi as a historical, literary and cultural figure in Russia.
SAPIR PRIZE. The Edward Sapir Prize for the best senior essay in anthropology was awarded to Sara Sherwood Wright of Timothy Dwight College, for her essay "The Origin of a Species; Explorations in Estimating a Speciation Date for Homo Erectus."
SAXE PRIZE. The J.W. Saxe Prize for Public Service is awarded to outstanding college and university students involved in public service activities during a summer or other term. SEAPINE SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS. The Seapine Summer Fellowships for Language Study in Latin America allow Yale students to accelerate rapidly in their command of Spanish or Portuguese and to learn first-hand about the cultures of the region. This year, awards went to Christopher Dampier '06 of Saybrook College and Amos Ductan '06 of Ezra Stiles College, both of whom will study in Quito, Ecuador; and Lee Hiromoto '05 of Morse College and Jeremy Merkelson '04 of Timothy Dwight College, both of whom will study in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.
SHARE AND CARE FOUNDATION GRANTS. Share and Care Foundation grants provide support for a summer research project or internship in South Asia that involves working with organizations that are trying to make social change by education, empowerment or training. This year's recipient is Shireen Cama '04 of Silliman College.
SOUTHEAST ASIA STUDIES GRANTS. Southeast Asia Studies Grants support research for students with a demonstrated commitment to the field of Southeast Asia studies. Joy Chia '04 of Silliman College, Andrew Klaber '04 of Trumbull College, Tiffany Pham '05 of Saybrook College, Don Phan '05 of Pierson College and Matthew Schlenker '05 of Berkeley College are this year's recipients.
SUNRISE FOUNDATION GRANTS. Sunrise Foundation Travel and Research Grants provide support for a semester abroad or research abroad during the summer in an "emerging market" country. Emily Achiume '05 of Silliman College, Mahesh Balakrishnan '05 of Silliman College, Joy Chia '04 of Silliman College, Jessica Gottlieb, Giovanna Masci '04 of Davenport College, Swati Pandey '04 of Trumbull College, Joshua Picker '04 of Davenport College, Benita Singh '04 of Branford College, and Tess Wheelwright '05 of Silliman College were awarded grants.
TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship, which supports up to four years of university study (i.e., senior year of college and one to three years of graduate school) for students planning careers in public service, were awarded to Yale College juniors Andrew Klaber of Trumbull College and Michael Bernstein of Jonathan Edwards College.
UDALL SCHOLARSHIPS. Morris K. Udall Scholarships support a year of undergraduate study for students with a commitment to environmental issues. Four of Yale's nominees were named Udall Scholars: Noah Chesnin '04 of Berkeley College; Livia DeMarchis '04 of Calhoun College; Andrew Klaber '04 of Trumbull College; and William Parish '05 of Morse College.
USA TODAY AWARDS. USA Today All-College First Academic Team Awards recognizing the outstanding academic and extracurricular accomplishments of undergraduates in all disciplines were awarded to Andrew Klaber '04 of Trumbull College and Jennifer Staple '03 of Timothy Dwight College.
VAN SINDEREN PRIZES. Five students received Adrian Van Sinderen Prizes for Book Collecting. The prizes were established in 1957 by the late Adrian Van Sinderen '10 B.A. to encourage undergraduates to collect books, to build up their own libraries and to read for both pleasure and education. The Senior Prize ($750) was awarded to Xin Dong of Trumbull College for his collection of Buddhist scripture; Senior Honorable Mention Prizes ($400) were given to Drew Baldwin of Berkeley College for his collection of bartending guides, and to Dora Melch of Trumbull College for her collection of signed books of contemporary poetry. The Sophomore Prize ($500) was awarded to Jason Farago of Silliman College for his collection on contemporary art and art theory; a Sophomore Honorable Mention Prize ($250) was awarded to Pablo Landa of Berkeley College for his collection on Jorges Luis Borges and his literary canon.
WINSTEAD ROUSE FELLOWSHIPS. The Elizabeth Winstead Rouse Fund for Peace Fellowships, which support research focusing on the countries of the Middle East or the Central Asia countries of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan were awarded to Paige Austin '06 of Davenport College, Gabrielle Goodfellow '04 of Trumbull College, Katrina Schnoebelen '04 of Calhoun College, Noa Sen '04 of Silliman College and Emily Wills '04 of Trumbull College.
WREXHAM PRIZES. The Wrexham Prize "for the best senior essay in the field of the humanities" was awarded to David Matthew Klotz of Branford College for his essay "Mysterious Ram in the Desert: Three Hymns to Amun-Re, Lord of Hibis from the Reign of Darius I, Transliteration, Translation, Commentary and Interpretation." The Wrexham Prize "for the best senior essay or other substantial piece of writing in the field of the social sciences" was awarded to Thomas N. Rigo Haug of Trumbull College for his essay "Does Trade Affect Income Distribution? A Cross-Country and Case Study Analysis."
YALE-CHINA ESSAY PRIZE. The 2003 Yale-China Essay Prize was awarded to Gregory Zeck '03 of Berkeley College for his essay "Another Side of the Mountain: Hu Shi in America, 1910-1917."
YALE-CHINA FELLOWSHIPS. Yale-China Fellowships supporting two years of teaching English at universities and secondary schools in China were awarded to seven seniors: David Auerbach of Davenport College, Jennifer Christenson of Branford College, Gregory Distelhorst of Silliman College; Luke Habberstad of Silliman College, Mariko Hirose of Timothy Dwight College, Carrie Pagnucco of Branford College and Yomei Shaw of Berkeley College.
YALE-NEW ASIA COLLEGE EXCHANGE PROGRAM. Undergraduates from Yale and New Asia College of Chinese University of Hong Kong participate in an exchange involving cross-cultural learning and interaction. Activities and student presentations take place in New Haven and in Hong Kong and focus on a different theme each year. Students selected for the 2003 conference on public service were: William Cruz '05 of Calhoun College, Samantha Culp '04 of Timothy Dwight College, Michelle de Saram '05 of Saybrook College, Lori Flores '05 of Branford College, Timothy Kleiman '04 of Saybrook College, William Parish '05 of Morse College, Emma Pollack-Pelzner '04 of Calhoun College and Gabrielle Tiven '04 of Saybrook College.
