Graduate/Professional International Study Grants

BHATT FELLOWSHIP. A Bhatt Fellowship providing support for research or an internship in South Asia was awarded to Devika Bordia, Ph.D., Anthropology.

KAO FUND RESEARCH GRANTS. The Charles Kao Fund provides support for summer research in East and Southeast Asia focusing on the impact of technology transfer processes between Asia and the West, and the social, cultural and political transformations in these regions. This year's winners are Daewha Kang, M.A., School of Architecture; Bonnie Pau, M.P.H., Epidemiology and Public Health; and Katherine Scharf, Ph.D., History.

COCA-COLA WORLD FUND AT YALE. The Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale provides summer travel grants for graduate and professional student projects involving applied research or internships overseas that focus on the intersection of at least two of the following fields: international law, international business or management, or international affairs and public policy. COUNCIL ON EAST ASIAN STUDIES SUMMER LANGUAGE MINI-GRANTS. Nine students received Council on East Asian Studies Summer Language Mini-Grants for the study of Japanese, Chinese or Korean. They are Gretchen Heefner, Ph.D., History; Eunhae Jeong, Ph.D., Forestry and Environmental Studies; Laura Lee, M.A., East Asian Studies; Olga Sooudi, Ph.D., Anthropology; Brian Vivier, Ph.D., History; Gavin Whitelaw, Ph.D., Anthropology; and Susie Woo, Ph.D., American Studies.

COUNCIL ON EAST ASIAN STUDIES DISSERTATION RESEARCH GRANT. Five students received Council on East Asian Studies Dissertation Research Grants, which provide aid to Ph.D. students who expect to pursue research focusing primarily on China, Japan or Korea for their doctoral dissertations during the next academic year. They are John Creamer, Ph.D., East Asian Languages and Literatures; John Delury, Ph.D., History; and Colin Smith, Ph.D., Anthropology.

EUROPEAN STUDIES FELLOWSHIPS. European Studies Fellowships, which support training in a European language during the summer, were awarded to Shialing Kwa, Ph.D., Spanish and Portuguese; Alistair Kwan, Ph.D., History of Science and Medicine; and Kate Olivier, Ph.D., Spanish and Portuguese.

EUROPEAN UNION FELLOWSHIPS. European Union Fellowships, which support research focusing on the European Union or European integration, were awarded to Angelica Bernal, Ph.D., Political Science; Csilla Kalocsai, Ph.D., Anthropology; Svilen Karaivanov, J.D., Law; Blaise Misztal, Ph.D., Political Science; and Aida Torres, J.S.D., School of Law.

FLAS FELLOWSHIPS. Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, funded by the U.S. Department of Education Title VI, are awarded to graduate and professional students whose academic work includes foreign language study and whose career plans include teaching, public service or business related to African studies, European studies or international affairs. FLAS Academic Year Fellowships, which fund intermediate or advanced study at Yale, were awarded to Judd Devermont, M.A., African Studies; Martina Forgwe, M.A., African Studies; Jeffrey Meserve, M.A., African Studies; and Erin Anderson, M.A, African Studies.

FLAS Summer Fellowships, which fund intensive language study over the summer, were awarded to Shialing Kwa, Ph.D., Spanish & Portuguese; Lawrence Lamanna, M.A., International Relations; Bethany Moreton, Ph.D, History; Elizabeth Nathan, Ph.D., Political Science; Kate Olivier, Ph.D., Spanish & Portuguese; Peter Tantsits, Master of Music, School of Music; and Hillary Young, M.E.M., Forestry and Environmental Studies.

FOX INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS. The Fox International Fellowships support student exchanges between Yale and the Free University of Berlin, Moscow State University, Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge University, Tokyo University Graduate School, Fudan University in Shanghai, PRC, Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and El Colegio de Mexico to conduct research in economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance, or contemporary history. This year's recipients are Susanne Augenhofer, LL.M, School of Law; Raphael Folsom, Ph.D., History; Roberto Frau, M.A., International Relations; Scott Kleeb, Ph.D., History; and Jennifer Smith, Ph.D., Political Science.

GLOBALIZATION AND SELF-DETERMINATION PROJECT GRANTS. The Globalization and Self-Determination Project provides pre-dissertation grants for projects with a focus on the future of the nation-state in the global economy, the activities of international financial institutions or the relationships between globalization and economic and/or political decentralization. This year's recipients are Artemis Christodulou, Ph.D., Comparative Literature; Katherine Glassmyer, Ph.D., Political Science; Takeshi Ito, Ph.D., Political Science; Maria Ivanova, D.F.E.S., Forestry and Environmental Sciences; Nazima Kadir, Ph.D., Anthropology; Richard Payne, Ph.D., Anthropology; Colin Smith, Ph.D., Anthropology; and Jennifer Tobin, Ph.D., Political Science.

LATIN AMERICAN AND IBERIAN STUDIES TRAVEL GRANTS. Latin American and Iberian Studies Travel Grants provide support for conducting research or study abroad in Latin America, the Caribbean, Portugal or Spain. Vladimir Gil, Ph.D., Anthropology, and Dorota Heneghan, Ph.D., Spanish and Portuguese, were awarded grants.

LEITNER SUMMER AWARDS. The Georg Walter Leitner Program in International Political Economy, which funds research on international political economy, have awarded fellowships to Elizabeth Addonizio, Ph.D., Political Science; Judd Devermont, M.A., African Studies; Ilmi Granoff, M.A./M.E.M., International Relations; Nimrod Kozlovski, J.S.D., School of Law; Yumin Sheng, Ph.D., Political Science; Corrina Steward, M.E.Sc., Forestry and Environmental Studies; Jennifer Tobin, Ph.D., Political Science; and Vineeta Yadav, Ph.D., Political Science.

LIGHT FELLOWSHIPS. Funded by the Richard U. Light Foundation of Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Light Fellowships at Yale support language study at approved sites in East Asia for a summer, term or academic year. In addition to undergraduate recipients (see Commencement section), the recipients of summer fellowships this year included: for study in China or Taiwan Ph.D. students Mayling Birney, Hyunhee Park and Erick Shiner; and for study in Japan, M.A. student Pei-Chi Tseng and Ph.D. student Christina Moon. In addition both a summer and term academic award was given to Ph.D. student Allison Alexy.

LINDSAY FELLOWSHIPS. Lindsay Fellowships for Research in Africa, which fund summer research designed to increase the understanding of Africa, were awarded to Shin Ahn, S.T.M., Divinity School; Oliver Balmer, Ph.D., Biology; Raina Croff, Ph.D., Anthropology; Jennifer Hruza, M.A., African Studies, Melanie Markowitz, J.D., School of Law; Erica Williams, M.A., African Studies; and Christina Wooldridge, M.B.A., School of Management.

BILDNER ISRAEL & JEWISH STUDIES TRAVEL GRANT. Eva Guggemos, Ph.D., History, was awarded the Robert L. Bildner '72 and Elisa Spungen Bildner '75 Israel and Jewish Studies Travel Grant, which provides support for travel to Israel for research or language training or for travel to any other country in order to undertake research in the field of Jewish Studies.

SOUTHEAST ASIA STUDIES SUMMER AWARDS. Southeast Asia Studies Summer Awards support research for students with a demonstrated commitment to the field of Southeast Asia studies. This year's recipients are Takeshi Ito, Ph.D., Political Science; Betony Jones, M.E.Sc., Forestry and Environmental Science; Emlyn Jones, M.D., School of Medicine; Charles Keith, Ph.D., History; Curtis Lambrecht, Ph.D., Political Science; Laiyee Leong, Ph.D., Political Science; John Neidel, Ph.D., Forestry and Environmental Science and Anthropology; Lien-Hang Nguyen, Ph.D., History; Jonathan Padwe, Ph.D., Forestry and Environmental Science and Anthropology; Lorraine Paterson, Ph.D., History; Richard Payne, Ph.D., Anthropology; and Kevin Woods, M.E.Sc., Forestry and Environmental Science.

NIARCHOS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS. Emily Anderson, Ph.D., Anthropology; Andrea Olsen, M.Div., Institute of Sacred Music, Religion; Athanassios Roussias, Ph.D., Political Science; and Haralampos Stratigopoulos, Ph.D., Electrical Engineering, have been awarded Stavros S. Niarchos Research Fellowships which support research focusing on post-classical or modern Greece and its larger interactions with its neighbors in the European and Balkan regions and beyond.

TINKER GRANT. The Field Research Grant 2002 supports graduate master and predissertation field research travel with a clear linkage to issues in Latin America, the Caribbean, Portugal and/or Spain.
