Yale's ties to one of the most important nations in East Asia were expanded and strengthened during a visit to South Korea by President Richard C. Levin last month.
Levin headed a small group of Yale administrators and faculty who traveled to Seoul on May 14, 15 and 16 to meet with Korean political and business leaders, colleagues from Korea's leading universities and Yale alumni to discuss the University's many international initiatives and to establish new ones.
Accompanying Levin on the three-day visit to Seoul were John Treat, professor and director of graduate studies in East Asian languages and literatures; Florencio López-de-Silanes, professor in the Yale School of Management; and Vice President and Secretary Linda K. Lorimer.
Levin presented the opening remarks at the Third Asian Corporate Governance Conference organized in conjunction with Yale's International Institute of Corporate Governance, which is directed by López-de-Silanes. The speech and subsequent activities received positive media coverage both for Levin and for Yale.
One of the highlights of the trip was a reception hosted by the Yale Club of Korea. Approximately 100 alumni and friends were present for a night of Yale remembrances and entertainment provided by Yale graduates. The reception was the largest event ever staged by the Yale Club of Korea.
The Yale delegation also met with a number of administrators from Korean universities including Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University and Ewha Womans University. These discussions covered a range of issues focusing on closer collaborations between Yale and Korea.
Yale already has strong ties with South Korea as Korean students make up the third largest grouping of international students at the University.
