Bender is the new Robert Levy Professor
His research has broad implications in the areas of cardiology, immunobiology and dermatology, among others. His studies are aimed at defining the cellular and molecular mechanisms which govern cell interactions that play a role in such processes as inflammation, graft rejection and atherosclerosis. He has made major contributions to medicine through his research on inflammatory, immune and hormonal effects on the endothelium, the thin lining of the walls of the body's arteries. Bender has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific articles and numerous abstracts, and has contributed chapters to a number of books, including the "Yale University School of Medicine Heart Book," edited by Drs. Barry Zaret, Lawrence Cohen and Marvin Moser. Bender holds joint appointments in the Departments of Medicine (cardiovascular medicine) and Immunology. He joined the Yale faculty in 1988 as an assistant professor of medicine and director of the Cardiovascular Immunology Laboratory in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. He was also a member of the Cardiac Transplant Group and an attending physician in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the School of Medicine 1988-1993. In 1991, Bender became a member of the Molecular Cardiobiology Program at Yale's Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine. He was named an associate professor of medicine and adjunct professor in immunobiology in 1993; a year later he was appointed associate chief of Cardiovascular Medicine Research. In 1995 he was named director of the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine Junior Faculty Clinical Scholar's Program. Bender was promoted to tenured associate professorships in medicine (cardiovascular) and immunobiology in 1997 and 1999, respectively. He was named a full professor with joint appointments in both departments in 2000. A graduate of Brandeis University, Bender earned his M.D. degree at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed a residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1983. His many honors include a National Research Service Award and a Clinical Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health.
