Artist's works portray Christianity through Thai art forms
"Christ on the Road to Bangkok," a mixed-media exhibition of works by Thai artist Sawai Chinnawong, will be on display at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) Sept. 2-Oct. 31.
Chinnawong, from Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is the 2003-2004 artist-in-residence at the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven. He is known for portraying Christianity through a Thai graphic idiom. His art takes inspiration from the traditional art of central Thailand, the area around Bangkok. For example, women in his paintings wear a Thai "pasin" while the hair is tied in the chignon common for women in the region.
A reception in honor of the artist and the exhibition will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, 4-6 p.m. in the Great Hall of ISM, 409 Prospect St. The event will feature Thai music. Free parking is available for guests of the reception, which is offered as part of the "Season of Rededication" of the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle at Yale.
The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Overseas Ministries Study Center with support from the Divinity School. For more information, call (203) 432-5180.
