Documentary on contemporary artists to be screened on campus
Members of the Yale and New Haven communities are invited to a preview screening one segment of an Emmy Award-nominated documentary that explores the work of contemporary artists, including many alumni of the University.
The entire documentary, titled "Art in the 21st Century," will air nationally on PBS on beginning Sept. 9 and 10.
The screening, which is free and open to the public, is a collaboration of the Yale University Art Gallery and Artspace. It will take place on Friday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Artspace, 50 Orange St. The one-hour segment to be shown is "Stories," featuring interviews and studio visits with artists Kiki Smith, Kara Walker, Trenton Doyle Hancock and Do-Ho Suh, M.F.A. '97. Wesley Miller, M.F.A. '02, who is the assistant curator for "Art in the 21st Century," will return to New Haven for the screening and discuss the making of this segment in the series. In addition to Suh, other Yale alumni whose contributions are explored in the eight-part series (known, for short, as "Art:21") are Martin Puryear, Matthew Barney, Ann Hamilton, Richard Serra and Maya Lin.
More than 100 preview screenings of documentary segments will take place at key partner sites nationwide. The Yale Art Gallery is one of the regional partners of the documentary and is the producer of the program. The gallery will host an array of community outreach and education activities built around the series over the coming year.
For more information on the screening, call Denise Markonish at (203) 772-2709.
