Dr. Donald J. Cohen

Professorship honors memory of Donald Cohen

A professorship has been created at the School of Medicine in honor of Dr. Donald J. Cohen, a pioneer in child psychiatry who served as director of the Yale Child Study Center from 1983 until his death in 2001, President Richard C. Levin announced.

Widely recognized as the leading American child psychiatrist of his generation, Cohen made groundbreaking contributions in biological psychiatry, clinical care and the development of international collaborations in his field. He was also known for the inroads he made in neurobiological research into autism and tic disorders, particularly Tourette's syndrome.

The Donald J. Cohen Professorship has been established through the generosity of Cohen's friends and colleagues. The honor will be bestowed on a senior faculty member of the Child Study Center, which is recognized for the clinical services and advocacy that it provides to its young patients and their families.

"Dr. Cohen's brilliant leadership and tireless efforts made the Child Study Center what it is today," says Levin. "He brought together great minds in pursuit of the answers to important questions, and the fruits of their research will forever benefit children and their families."

The Child Study Center is one of the world's leading centers of child psychiatry. It is internationally known for its multidisciplinary programs of clinical and basic research, professional education and comprehensive services. Among its numerous programs, the center offers help for conduct disorders, communication and speech problems, learning disorders, autism and childhood trauma.
