Auction will help fight hunger
and homelessness

Weekend retreats, dinners at local restaurants, homemade goodies, personal services -- these are among some of the items that will be available to the highest bidder at the annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction.

The event is organized by students in Yale's medical, public health and nursing programs to raise funds for organizations dedicated to alleviating hunger and homelessness in the Greater New Haven area.

Last year, the auction raised over $30,000 and provided grants to New Haven Cares, Loaves & Fishes, St. Thomas More Soup Kitchen, New Haven Homelessness Resource Center, New Haven Home Recovery Inc., Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen and Douglas House.

The items on auction -- which range from the practical (gift certificates at local businesses) to the whimsical (a faculty member's trademark bowtie) -- are donated by faculty, students, staff and local businesses.

The event includes two components: a Silent Auction, held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 17-20, in the Sterling Hall of Medicine (SHM) rotunda, 333 Cedar St.; and a Live Auction, taking place Nov. 20, 4-6 p.m. in Harkness Auditorium, SHM. The Silent Auction will end when the Live Auction begins, and bidders should be prepared to pay by cash or check at the time of purchase.

In conjunction with the auction, a number of events designed to raise both funds and awareness about hunger and homelessness were offered. These included a canned food drive Nov. 7-10 and a Hunger Banquet and ClubMed Benefit Party on Nov. 13. A Flag Football game (which features the auctioning off of stunts) takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14 on the lawn of Edward S. Harkness Memorial Hall, 367 Cedar St.; it will be followed by a panel discussion on "Economic Disparity" at 5:30 p.m. in Rm. 110 of the Jane Ellen Hope Building, 315 Cedar St. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.med.yale.edu/yaxis/auction.

This year's Hunger and Homelessness Auction is co-sponsored by the Health and Human Rights Committee and the Women's Health Initiative.
