Images of three sacred spaces at Yale -- Dwight Chapel, the Slifka Center for Jewish Life and the Saint Thomas More Chapel -- are featured in a recently released 2004 calendar that has been created in honor of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM).
The calendar is based on a forthcoming book titled "Sacred Spaces in New Haven and its Environs," a project of ISM that explores the diverse sacred architecture of the Greater New Haven area. The calendar's 14 photographs of Christian and Jewish houses of worship, taken by local photographer Robert A. Lisak, are a sampling of the more than 100 images that will be included in the full-color book. Jeanne Criscola of Criscola Design in North Haven is the calendar's designer.
In addition to ISM, sponsors of the calendar project are the New Haven Colony Historical Society, the New Haven Preservation Trust and the Saint Thomas More Catholic Center and Chapel.
ISM, which is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of worship, theology, music and the related arts, undertook the "Sacred Spaces" book project to showcase New Haven as a richly textured, multiethnic tapestry of living worship traditions, and as a place which offers residents and visitors a varied gallery of sacred spaces for their inspiration, education and enjoyment. Recent Divinity School graduate Lee M. Smith has written the text for the book, which features an introduction by editor Jaime Lara, associate professor of Christian art and architecture and chair of the Program in Religion and the Arts at ISM and the Divinity School.
Intended for both general readers and architectural historians, "Sacred Spaces in New Haven and its Environs" includes descriptions and analyses of architecturally distinctive churches and synagogues in
the Greater New Haven area. It also includes an essay about the biblical design of the city and provides walking and driving tours of the sacred sites. For ordering information for the book, contact ISM at (203) 432-5180.
Copies of the calendar are available for purchase at the Yale Divinity Bookstore (203/432-6101) and the New Haven Colony Historical Society (203/562-4183).
The ISM has operated since its founding in conjunction with the School of Music and the Divinity School to train students for service as musicians, as leaders of communities of faith, and as scholars and teachers. It sponsors several performing groups, including the Yale Camerata and Yale Schola Cantorum. As an interdisciplinary center and major arts presenter in New Haven, the institute offers a full schedule of concerts, drama, art exhibitions, films, literary readings, lectures and multimedia events during the year.
