Alvin Cowan, the quarterback for the Bulldogs, was awarded the 2003 Boston Globe's Gold Helmet Award for the top I-AA player in New England by the New England Sports Writers. Cowan, the first Yale player to earn that distinction, broke 16 University passing or total offensive records and helped the Bulldogs to 43 records overall.
Marjorie Funk, professor at the School of Nursing, has been awarded the Nursing Investigator Award from the Heart Failure Society of America for her presentation titled "Bioimpedance Monitoring in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure." The award recognizes outstanding, innovative research in the field of heart failure from an independent nurse researcher.
William L. Jorgensen, the Conkey P. Whitehead Professor of Chemistry, has been named editor of the Journal of Chemical Information & Computer Sciences which is published by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. He announced that he plans to split the journal into two new publications that will focus on chemical informatics and computational chemistry, respectively. The new journals are scheduled to be launched in 2005.
Joseph LaPalombara, the Arnold Wolfers Professor Emeritus of Political Science, was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award for 2003 from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The award is presented annually to alumni of the college who "distinguish themselves through extraordinary achievement."
Janet Parkosevich, a cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a doctoral student at the School of Nursing, was one of three individuals honored with the Friendly Hearts Award by the Yale Cardiovascular Research Fund. Parkosevich is the first nurse to be awarded this honor.
