Dr. Daniel C. DiMaio

DiMaio is appointed as Von Zedtwitz
Professor of Genetics

Dr. Daniel C. DiMaio, who has been appointed the Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Genetics, is studying how viral and mutant cellular proteins affect cell growth, especially how they induce the development of cancer.

In addition to serving as vice chair of the Department of Genetics, DiMaio is director of the Yale Cancer Center's Molecular Virology Research Program, which consists of 13 independent but interactive laboratories with common interests in the basic molecular biology of viruses that are relevant to cancer and related topics. Many of the proteins that DiMaio and his laboratory study are derived from tumor viruses, particularly papillomaviruses, which are an important cause of human cancers.

By gaining insights into the molecular biology of carcinogenesis and cell growth, the researchers hope to suggest new approaches for treating cancer and other diseases.

In addition to serving as the principal investigator on a study of the molecular basis of viral transformation funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), DiMaio leads a pre-doctoral training program in virology and a postdoctoral training program in molecular and viral oncology, both also funded by the NIH.

After graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in biology from Yale College in 1974, DiMaio earned both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from John Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he carried out dissertation research with Nobel laureate Daniel Nathans. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, he joined the Yale faculty in 1983 as an assistant professor. He was appointed associate professor in 1988, was awarded tenure in 1991 and was named to a full professorship in 1994. He served as interim director of the Department of Genetics 1997-1998.

The author of numerous scientific papers, DiMaio is an editor at the Journal of Virology and has served on the editorial boards of many other publications. He has also been a consultant to biotechnology companies, such as Bristol-Myers Squibb.

His numerous honors include a Sweibilius Cancer Research Award, an NIH MERIT Award and Yale's first Mallinckrodt Scholar Award. A co-organizer of the Connecticut Virology Group, DiMaio chaired the DNA Virus Division of the American Academy for Microbiology and was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2001, he was chosen by Yale graduate students to receive an Outstanding Mentor Award.
