John E. Pepper, vice president for finance and administration, announced four new appointments in recent weeks.
In December, Janet Lindner was named as associate vice president for administration, and Robert P. Schwartz was designated as associate vice president and chief human resources officer.
On Jan. 6, Pepper announced the appointments of John H. Bollier as associate vice president for facilities operations and Jerry A. Warren as associate vice president for construction and renovation.
The latter posts, Pepper noted, replace the position of associate vice president of facilities.
"Over the last decade, the combination of the dramatic growth in the University's construction and renovation work and the challenges of operating and maintaining ever more complex facilities has led the officers to conclude that Yale would be well served in splitting the position formerly held by Kemel Dawkins into two senior positions," he said.
Brief profiles of the new associate vice presidents follow:
Janet Lindner
Janet Lindner had served as interim associate vice president for administration and head of the human resources area since May.
In her new post, she will oversee procurement and administrative support services including parking, transportation, travel, graduate housing, and traffic, receiving and stores. "In addition," said Pepper, "she will undertake special projects for me and continue to supervise the offices of integrated administrative systems, and productivity and management reporting. Janet served as executive director of administrative operations since the completion of our Tercentennial celebrations, which she so ably directed."
Previously, as chief administrative officer for the City of New Haven, Lindner was responsible for the city's operating departments, including police, fire, public works, parks, human resources, labor relations and purchasing.
Before that, she worked for the Office of the Mayor of New York City, helping to lead the labor-management Quality of Work Life Program and serving as assistant director of the Office of Operations.
She earlier was executive assistant to the president of the New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, a consortium of union locals, and business agent for one of the largest locals of the Service Employees International Union.
Lindner holds a degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University and a master's degree in public administration.
Robert P. Schwartz
Robert P. Schwartz comes to Yale from the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., where he was vice president of human resources and administration for its biomedical services division, which supplies over half of the nation's blood supply and has over 20,000 employees and 52 separate labor agreements.
"Rob will lead Yale's human resources initiatives, with responsibility for recruitment, placement, compensation, benefits, organizational development and training programs, and labor relations," said Pepper. "His appointment comes at a propitious time for Yale because the officers of the University and I are eager to focus more effort on strengthening both human resources and the overall administration of the University."
At the Red Cross, Schwartz led a comprehensive review to improve workplace practices and implemented a wide-ranging communications plan for employees across the country.
Previously, Schwartz was senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Teleglobe Communication Corporation of Reston, Virginia. Earlier, he worked for Nabisco, rising to senior vice president of human resources for the company's Canadian operation. During his tenure, Nabisco was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers.
Schwartz began his professional career with Frito-Lay and American Hospital Supply Corporation where he was responsible for labor relations.
Schwartz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Bradley University.
John Bollier
John Bollier has served as interim associate vice president for facilities since the departure of Kemel Dawkins in mid-September.
As associate vice president for facilities operations, Bollier will lead the University departments with responsibilities for operating and maintaining Yale's facilities and grounds.
"These include custodial services, physical plant, utilities, grounds, residential colleges operations, environmental compliance, and the fire marshal," said Pepper.
Prior to his appointment as interim associate vice president, Bollier was executive director of facilities development and operations at the School of Medicine.
"He did an outstanding job overseeing the planning and construction of the new Anlyan Center for Medical Research and Education, as well as numerous other renovation projects throughout the medical campus," said Pepper.
Bollier joined Yale in 1992 as a project manager for the School of Medicine and was promoted to director of project management in 1995.
A registered architect, Bollier has worked with several local architectural firms during his career, including Gregg & Wies Architects, Ireland Architects, and Kevin Roche-John Dinkeloo and Associates.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning and holds an M.B.A. from the University of New Haven.
Jerry Warren
As associate vice president for construction and renovation, Jerry Warren will be responsible for Yale's "ambitious" program of new construction and renovation and will work with the University Planner and the Project Management Office, said Pepper.
"Yale is in the midst of the largest capital program in its history with numerous projects planned over the course of the next 10 years," he added, "including the renovation of five additional residential colleges; major renovations to the libraries and the University Art Gallery; construction of four new buildings to serve science and engineering; and extensive renovation or new construction of other academic and administrative units. The successful and cost effective implementation of the facilities plan is critical to Yale's future."
Warren comes to Yale from Procter & Gamble where he worked for 29 years. "Most recently," said Pepper, "I have worked with Jerry on the design and construction of the $80 million Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Jerry has a proven ability to complete a range of major capital projects on time and within budget. He has also distinguished himself in the improvement of project development, design and construction processes."
Warren earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
