Stern among Yale alumni honored by Architectural Digest
Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the School of Architecture, was one of 11 Yale alumni recently cited by Architectural Digest in its list of the top 100 architects and interior designers.
Of the 30 architects on the magazine's list, over a third were Yale graduates.
In addition to Stern, who earned his M.A. from the School of Architecture in 1965, the Yale graduates honored were: Marc Appleton '72 M.Arch.; Peter Gluck '62 B.A., '65 M.Arch.; Alexander Gorlin '80 M.Arch.; Charles Gwathmey '62 M.Arch.; Kazuhiro Ishii '75 M.E.D.; Hugh Newell Jacobsen '55 M.Arch.; Thomas Kligerman '82 M.Arch.; Jaquelin T. Robertson '55 B.A., '61 M.Arch.; Stanley Tigerman '60 B.Arch., '61 M.Arch.; Robert J. Yudell '69 B.A., '73 M.Arch.
Published in the January issue of the magazine, the AD100 honor roll is accompanied by thumbnail portraits, biographical sketches and images of work exemplifying the distinctive styles of each of the designers.
The citation for Stern noted that he has "carved a niche in the pantheon of design as one of the prime proponents of an architecture of pedigree." In addition to his academic work, Stern is principal of his own 140-person firm.
Many of the alumni honored credit their experiences at the School of Architecture with influencing and inspiring them. For instance, Ishii and Yudell describe Charles Moore, dean of the School of Architecture 1965-1970, as their mentor and inspiration. Kligerman and John Ike, his partner and fellow founder of the firm Ike Kligerman Barkley, single out Stern as having strongly influenced their "design philosophy."
In addition, celebrated architect Frank Gehry, who holds a visiting professorship at the School of Architecture, was also among the individuals honored by Architectural Digest.
