Campus Notes

Kama Ginkas, one of the most acclaimed theater directors in Russia, will discuss and sign copies of his book "Provoking Theatre: Kama Ginkas Directs" at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Yale Bookstore, 77 Broadway. Ginkas is currently directing the MTYZ Theatre/Moscow New Generation Theatre in the world premiere of "Rothschild's Fiddle" at the Yale Repertory Theatre. He will be accompanied at the signing by John Freedman, co-author of the book.

The Department of Chemistry will sponsor two lectures at the Omni Hotel on Friday, Jan. 30. Dr. Paul Reider of Amgen Inc. will speak on "Chemistry, Selectivity & the Biological Interface." Professor Erik J. Sorensen of Princeton University will speak on "Polycycles from Polyenes Seeking Opportunities for Organic Synthesis." The lectures, which begin at 12:30 p.m., are free and open to the public. For more information, call (203) 432-3916.

Several University employees and alumni will be featured in a new Connecticut Public Television series about seniors in the state. Titled "Seniors: Living a Quality Life," the 10-part series will be broadcast at 9 p.m on the fourth Thursday of each month from January through October. Among the Yale affiliates featured will be Dr. Mary Tinetti, the Gladys Phillips Crofoot Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Public Health, and Cheever Tyler '59, a New Haven attorney and filmmaker. Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, associate dean of executive programs at the School of Management, presided over the market open of the NASDAQ stock market on Dec. 18 at NASDAQ's Times Square MarketSite in New York City. The ceremony was in honor of the 48th CEO summit of The Chief Executive Leadership Institute of the School of Management which took place Dec. 18-19 in New York. The CEO summit is a forum for peer-driven leadership education between and among the nation's top executives and foremost scholars. 140 world-renowned chief executives, policy makers and academics attended the conference, which was titled "Happy Days: Are They Here Again?"

Maija Jansson, director of the Center for Parliamentary History, and Paul Bushkovitch, professor of history, attended a conference in Moscow last month to celebrate the 450th anniversary of diplomatic relations between England and Russia. Titled "Russia-Britain: 450 Years of Diplomatic and Trade Relations," the conference was held Dec. 16-18 at the Kremlin. The event featured lectures, exhibits and cultural activities.

Nate Lawrie, a senior in Yale College and a tight end for the Bulldogs, was selected to play in the Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic, a college all-star game in Montgomery, Alabama, that features some of the best Division I players in the country. The game was televised by ESPN2 on Dec. 25. Lawrie broke the Yale record for receptions by a tight end this fall with 72 catches for a squad that was among the nation's best in passing and scoring. He is the first Yale football player to participate in the Blue-Gray All-Star game since 1998.

The governing board of the Yale University Art Gallery has elected Robert W. Doran '55 as its chair and Robert F. Shapiro '56 as vice chair. Frederick R. Mayer '50, the former chair, will continue as a member of the board. Doran served for two decades as chief executive officer and managing partner of the Wellington Management Company, a private investment management company headquartered in Boston. He is a trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among other positions. Shapiro is vice chair and partner at Klingenstein Fields and Co. LLC, an investment advisory company. He also serves as a trustee of Lenox Hill Hospital, among other positions.
