Dr. William H. Sledge

Psychiatrist Dr. William Sledge is appointed
the George D. and Esther S. Gross Professor

Dr. William H. Sledge, professor of psychiatry and master of Calhoun College, has been appointed the first George D. and Esther S. Gross Professor of Psychiatry.

The new chair was established through the support of both the Elizabeth K. Dollard Charitable Trust and the Esther S. Gross Trust. The Gross Trust was established by Dr. George D. Gross, who was a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine (1936) and Dr. Esther S. Gross, who studied physiological chemistry while a graduate student at Yale. Elizabeth K. Dollard was a 1939 graduate of the Yale Law School, and contributions to Yale from the Elizabeth K. Dollard Trust reflect her lifelong interest in the interactions of psychiatry, law and medicine. In 1990, the Trust established the Elizabeth K. Dollard Law Professorship at the Law School, held by Dan Kahan.

A psychoanalyst and a psychiatrist, Sledge also serves as the medical director of the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital and assistant chief of psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

His professional interests include schizophrenia, particularly associated communication disturbances; aviation psychiatry; community and public sector psychiatry; the doctor-patient relationship; the education of psychiatrists and medical students; and mental health services research, among other topics.

Sledge is the editor or co-editor of "Core Readings in Psychiatry: An Annotated Reading List," "Clinical Challenges in Psychiatry," "Core Readings in Psychiatry: An Annotated Guide to the Literature" (second edition) and "Encyclopedia of Psychotherapy." He has also authored or co-authored numerous book chapters and reviews.

At Yale, he has been master of Calhoun College since 1995 and has served on numerous University committees.

Beyond Yale, he has been a consultant to numerous organizations, government agencies and businesses. He has also taught about the psychiatric aspects of aviation careers in courses offered by the Federal Aviation Agency and the U.S. Air Force.

Sledge holds a bachelor's degree in English from Washington and Lee University and obtained his M.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He joined Yale's Department of Psychiatry as a resident in 1972. Following completion of his specialty training, he served a two-year tour of duty in the Air Force. In 1977 he returned to Yale as a member of the Department of Psychiatry faculty. He is a 1986 graduate of the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis.

From 1987 to 1989, Sledge was director of the outpatient division of the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC). He was the clinical director of CMHC from 1989 to 1996, and in 1994 served for a period as the center's acting director.

Sledge has received numerous honors, including the Department of Psychiatry's Stephen Fleck Humanitarian Award. Since 2000, he has been listed in the publication "Best Doctors in America."
