Robert F. Thompson

Robert F. Thompson will serve another
term as master of Timothy Dwight College

Robert F. Thompson, the Colonel John Trumbull Professor of the History of Art, has been reappointed as master of Timothy Dwight College by President Richard C. Levin.

Thompson, who has been master of Timothy Dwight College since 1978, is the longest-serving of any current residential college master. His new four-year appointment begins July 1.

A leading authority on African and Afro-American art and music, he heads the Chubb Fellowship at Timothy Dwight College, which has brought to campus numerous world and national leaders, as well as such famed Latin performers as Tito Puente and Eddie Palmier.

In a letter to the community of the residential college, Levin noted that Thompson's reappointment was recommended by a committee of Timothy Dwight College fellows and students, which was chaired by Jonathan Spence, Sterling Professor of History.

"The committee reported that comments about 'Master T' were overwhelmingly positive," wrote Levin. "As one student stated, 'Master T defines the College.' ...

"There was widespread praise for Master T's obvious love of TD, his enthusiasm over intramurals, the dance and pizza parties in the master's house, and his general 'style,'" continued Levin. "Under Master T's leadership, those affiliated with TD see it as one of the most diverse and innovative colleges at Yale."

Levin noted that the committee also reported "great admiration for Dean John Loge, who works closely with Master T for the general well-being of all those in the TD community."

In thanking the committee for its work, Levin said, "I know that all members of the TD community join with them and me in congratulating Master Thompson on his special service to Yale and his continued leadership in Timothy Dwight College."

Thompson, a member of the Yale faculty since 1965, holds three degrees from the University -- a B.A. (1955), M.A. (1961) and Ph.D. (1965).
