Human rights experts to examine
women's rights under Islamic law

A panel of Yale faculty members and human rights experts will hold a roundtable discussion on women living under Islamic law on Thursday, April 15, in Rm. 211 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.

The discussion, "Local Institutions, Global Controversies: Women Under Sharia," will take place between 12:20 and 1:30 p.m. It will be preceded by a buffet lunch.

The event, which is open only to the Yale community, is sponsored by Yale's Women Faculty Forum, Center for African Studies, Women's & Gender Studies Program and the Yale Center for International & Area Studies.

Participants in the discussion are Ayesha Imam, board member, BAOBAB for Women's Human Rights; Feyi Koya-Adunbi and Ayo Obe, former associate and president, respectively, of the Nigerian Civil Liberties Organization; and Yale faculty members Seyla Benhabib, the Eugene Meyer Professor of Political Science and Philosophy, and Kamari Clarke, associate professor of anthropology.

This roundtable discussion will build on the lectures being presented by Obe and Imam on Wednesday, April 14, as part of the Council on African Studies series "Gender, Culture, Rights and Muslim Laws (Sharia) in Northern Nigeria." Those lectures will take place at 4:15 p.m. in Rm. 202 of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave.

For more information or to RSVP for the lunch on April 15, contact Rachel Thomas at (203) 432-8847 or rachel.thomas@yale.edu.
