Groundbreaking ceremony held for
police station-community center

New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., Yale President Richard Levin and Yale Police Chief James Perrotti were among the town and University officials who literally moved the earth on April 22 to make way for a new 36,000-square-foot building that will house a Yale police station and community center.

Designed by Boston architect William Rawn '65 B.A., the Rose Center, located behind the Swing Space dormitory on Ashmun Street, will include the Dixwell-Yale University Learning Center with 16 computer stations, a spacious meeting room and kitchen for community groups, and storage space for athletic equipment.

The center is named for its "cornerstone" donor and motivating force, Deborah Rose '72 B.A., '77 M.P.H. and '89 Ph.D. (center), who has long had an interest in fostering a productive partnership between Yale police and neighboring communities. Rose, who is committed to making digital technology more accessible to New Haven residents, also has helped bring computers to the city's public libraries.
