Sundance Lab director named interim head of playwriting department
Robert Blacker, who has been instrumental in the development of over 100 American plays, will serve as interim chair of the School of Drama's Playwriting Department for the 2004-2005 academic year, announced Dean James Bundy.
As artistic director of Sundance Theatre Labs since 1997, Blacker created a new format and identity for the seasonal workshop for developing new theater projects and helped create new programs for playwrights. During his tenure, over 45 projects have gone on to production, including this year's Pulitzer Prize-winner, "I Am My Own Wife" by Doug Wright; the musical "The Light in the Piazza" by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas; and "The Laramie Project" by Moises Kaufman.
Blacker began his career at the Public Theater, and was the first dramaturg in its Play Department under Joseph Papp, before co-founding the revived La Jolla Playhouse, where he served as associate artistic director 1983-1996. While there, he picked up a Tony Award with artistic director Des McAnuff for Outstanding Regional Theatre for such La Jolla productions as "A Walk in the Woods," The Who's "Tommy" and the Steppenwolf "The Grapes of Wrath." He has served as an evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts, screened material for senior executives at Miramax, and has taught playwriting and Shakespearean studies in the United States and abroad.
Mark Bly, who has served in that position since 1992, announced his resignation earlier this month. The School of Drama is undertaking a national search to make a term appointment for the fall of 2005.
