fund new home for F&ES
The School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) will be able to begin the construction of a new home that will bear the name of a Yale College alumnus who recently made a major gift to the school.
The new building will be named after Richard Kroon, a New Jersey resident who retired in 2001 after 32 years with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
"My family and I believe deeply in the objectives Dean [James Gustave] Speth has set out for the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and in the urgency with which our global environmental problems must be addressed. We are also very grateful for the rich educational and cultural experiences Yale provided my four sons, my brother and me," said Kroon, who graduated from Yale in 1964.
The building is projected to cost approximately $27 million and to take four years to complete. With the Kroon gift, F&ES is close to attaining its fundraising goal or the building.
"I can hardly express my excitement," said Speth. "This magnificent gift not only permits us to honor Rick and his family, it gives our project a huge boost in momentum. President [Richard C.] Levin has authorized Yale to proceed full steam ahead with efforts to identify an architect and get the building designed and built."
F&ES now occupies eight buildings along Prospect and Sachem streets. The new building will be located near Sage Hall, which presently is the school's main administrative building. The new building will house classrooms, a library, faculty offices, administrative offices and the Yale Environmental Center, which will consist of an auditorium and breakout and exhibit areas.
"The new building will be an inspirational and instructional model of sustainable design, and a symbol of the school's ideals and values," said Stephen Kellert, chair of the building committee and the Tweedy/Ordway Professor of Social Ecology.
Kroon is a long-standing supporter of Yale and F&ES. In 2002, he established the Kroon Environmental Studies Scholarship, which is awarded annually to graduates of Yale College who are pursuing an advanced degree at F&ES and demonstrate financial need. He is also a major contributor to the President's Discretionary Fund, which supports research and other scholarly work, and a member of the F&ES Leadership Council.
Kroon was an analyst at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, one of the founders of the firm's London operation and managing partner of its Sprout Group venture capital fund.
