Up-and-coming teen stars and world-class veterans will be pitted against one another in this year's Pilot Pen Tennis competition, a U.S. Open Series event held Aug. 20-28 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
Considered New England's premiere women's sports entertainment event, the competition this year features four of the world's top 10 and eight of the top 15-ranked players, including Kim Clijsters of Belgium, veteran Lindsay Davenport of the United States, Russian players Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova (this year's Wimbledon champion) and Paola Suarez of Argentina. The players hail from more than 20 countries, and 24 of them have qualified to compete in this year's Olympics in Athens, Greece.
The tournament starts with qualifying rounds Aug. 20-22, when the main draw begins. Special giveaways and ticket deals will be offered throughout the tournament, with special events ranging from Comcast/ESPN Kids Day on Sunday, Aug. 22 (tickets start at just $6) to Schick College Night on Wednesday, Aug. 25 (students, faculty and employees from any college receive a 33% savings on up to four middle-tier tickets).
The environs of and around the center will take on a festive flair as spectators swarm to the Food Court, shop for the latest items from FILA and other vendors, visit sponsor display booths and line up for player autographs.
Throughout the tournament, the New Haven Jazz Festival at the Pilot Pen will feature live jazz performances by some of Connecticut's most noted musicians. These take place 5:30-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the last day of the tournament, Aug. 28.
A variety of seating and ticket options are offered, ranging from week-long reserved seats to family packages.
