Yale endowment reaches
record high in last fiscal year

Yale's endowment earned an 8.8% return in the last fiscal year and totaled a record high $11 billion on June 30, 2003, Yale's Investments Office has reported.

Investment officials said the strong investment gain came in a year when the S&P 500 earned 0.3%.

Spending from the endowment in the University's current fiscal year is expected to total approximately $501 million, a 7% increase over endowment spending in the prior fiscal year. The endowment's contribution equals an estimated 29% of the University's revenues, more than two times the share of the operating budget support provided a decade ago.

The endowment has returned an annualized 16% over the past 10 years, placing the University in the top rank of institutional funds. Over the past decade, endowment funds grew from $3.2 billion to $11 billion.
