ASSET-Dell deal provides discounts on
home computers to Yale employees

Yale employees can save money when purchasing computers for their personal use, thanks to an arrangement forged by the ASSET (Administrative Services and Support Enhancement Team) program.

Recently, Procurement Department senior buyer Stephen Arnold, in conjunction with Yale Human Resources, secured a deal with Dell Computers that allows employees and faculty to purchase computers and services for home and personal use at a sizeable discount. The arrangement comes at no extra cost to the University, and focuses on providing employees with the tools they need to grow and develop.

"This is a very good example of how we can leverage the University's procurement capabilities to assist Yale employees in meeting their personal development objectives," says John Mayes, executive director of the Procurement Department.

Exclusively for employees of Yale University, the base price for the Dell Dimension 2400 -- including a 2.40GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256MB memory and a 40GB hard drive -- is $544. The package includes a 17-inch monitor and pre-installed

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, as well as six months of free Internet access via Earthlink. The package also offers online PC training, and Yale employees can take advantage of up to two free courses.

This deal can save employees $200 to $300 off similar packages at retail stores. Upgrade packages are available, also at a discount. For example, upgrading from 2.40GHz to 2.60GHz would normally add around $100. For employees, the additional cost is $27.60.

"It's a great starter system for employees," says Arnold, noting that the included Microsoft Office Basic Edition software alone is worth around $150.

To take advantage of this offer go to www.yale.edu/dellpc or call toll-free (888) 987-3355. In the coming weeks, demonstration units will be on display around campus for employees to view and try out.

"We will continue to look at ways to leverage the purchasing power of Yale for employees and faculty without incurring a lot of cost," says Rob Schwartz, associate vice president and chief human resources officer. "With this venture, we hope to provide employees and their families, at a reasonable cost, with a powerful tool to learn and grow."
