The University Library will welcome students and faculty to campus with exhibits celebrating the joys of reading and highlighting the extensive collections of primary sources in its Manuscripts and Archives department.
"Readers' Welcome to Campus," to be on view in the nave of Sterling Memorial Library, features testimonials by Yale faculty, administrators, staff and students describing books that have made lasting impressions on them -- everything from the Bible to the poetry of Wallace Stevens. The exhibit is designed to introduce newcomers to some key figures on campus and in the Yale Library, highlight book selections from all walks of life, and celebrate the universal joy of reading.
Members of the staff of Manuscripts and Archives have selected some of their favorite collections for the accompanying exhibit in the library's Memorabilia Room. Manuscripts and Archives makes primary source materials available for study to all members of the Yale community as well as to researchers from outside the University. These resources include the Yale University Archives and over 1,700 collections of personal and family papers and organizational records that document a variety of areas.
The items in the library's exhibition include letters, postcards, photographs, posters and one-of-a-kind, hand-bound diaries. Highlights include logo and publication work by renowned graphic designer Paul Rand and excerpts from the papers of Stanley Milgram's seminal and controversial 1960s experiments on obedience to authority.
Both exhibits will be on view through the month of September. Sterling Memorial Library is located at 120 High St. For library hours and other information, visit the website at www.library.yale.edu.
