Non-smokers are winners -- that's the message of a poster being distributed around campus by the Student Health Education division of Yale University Health Services.
The poster is the latest tool in the Student Health Education's "Smoke-Free @ Yale" campaign, designed to raise awareness about the hazards of smoking, help current smokers quit and prevent future generations from becoming hooked on nicotine.
As part of the campaign, Student Health Education has been producing posters of winning teams featuring the simple declaration "Smoke-Free @ Yale." The first poster, back in 2002, featured the Ivy League-championship-winning men's basketball team.
The newest poster showcases the members of the women's squash team, which won the 2004 Ivy Championship, as well as the CSA Barhite Trophy and the CSA Howe Cup Championship.
Mark Talbott, coach of the women's team, is enthusiastic about the publicity and the opportunity for public health education. "We are proud of our women's squash team and are happy to highlight them in this manner," he says.
Sally Rinaldi, health education coordinator, who originated the program, plans to continue the program with winning, smoke-free teams in the future.
As part of the Smoke-Free @ Yale program, Student Health Education offers pamphlets, quit kits, fact sheets and promotional items designed to help smokers quit. These are available in Rm. 405 of the University Health Services Center, 17 Hillhouse Ave. For further information, call (203) 432-1892.
