Benefit concert

The Yale Cancer Center advisory board will honor Mel Goldstein with a jazz concert to support the Dr. Mel Goldstein Multiple Myeloma Research Fund on Sunday, Nov. 21.

The Ellis Marsalis Quartet will perform at Battell Chapel, Elm and College streets, at 4:30 p.m. Marsalis has taught some of the finest young talent in jazz, including his sons Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason, as well as Harry Connick Jr.

Goldstein, the chief meteorologist for News Channel 8 ­ WTNH, is a survivor of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. In 1999, he established the Dr. Mel Goldstein Multiple Myeloma Research Fund at Yale Cancer Center to help fund clinical trials for this form of cancer.

YUWO activities

The Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO) will host two events next week.

A "Lunch and Learn" talk with David Blight, director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition, will be held at noon on Monday, Nov. 8. Blight will speak on "Black Freedom -- Seized or Given? The Discovery of Two New Slave Narratives and the Meaning of American Emancipation" in the Saybrook College master's house, 90 High St. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; coffee and dessert will be served. On Wednesday, Nov. 10, Charles Hill, lecturer in international affairs and distinguished fellow in international security studies, will deliver the second lecture in the series "U.S. Security in the Age of Terrorism." Titled "The War," it will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Rm. 119 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St. The fee for the series is $25. The series is open only to members of YUWO and their guests. Veterans Information Session

The Office for Equal Opportunity Programs will host a veterans information sesssion at the Peabody Museum of Natural History on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

The event will take place in the auditorium from noon to 1:30 p.m. Linda Spoonster Schwartz, commissioner of the Connecticut Commission on Veterans Affairs, will provide information on federal and state veterans benefits, military history cards, and other materials for those who are interested. She will also be available to answer questions. There is no admission fee and the public is invited.

Piano concert for charity

Renowned classical pianist Barbara A. Celkupa Herrick will perform at a charity piano concert organized by the Yale chapter of Asha for Education.

Other performers will be high school students Pooja Chaudhuri and Shomik Ghosh. The event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, in Sudler Hall, 100 Wall St. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors; $7 for adults; and $10 for families.

Asha is a secular organization that promotes education for underprivileged children in India. Net proceeds from the concert will be donated to Anandan, a school run by volunteers in Kolkata, India, and supported by Asha.

Language Table

Art Place exhibit

The Yale Medical Group Art Place at the Yale Physicians Building, 800 Howard Ave., will premiere its 10th exhibit on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Over 20 local, national and international artists will present works in various media, including paintings, photographs, quilts, jewelry, sculptures and woodturning. The exhibit will also feature the presentation and reading of "Caduceus," a collection of poetry from accomplished national and local poets.

Exhibit hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Admission is free. The exhibit will run through April. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Child Conduct Clinic
