Journal fostering international dialogue
with Chinese translations of its articles

The Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE), an international peer-reviewed English-language quarterly owned by Yale and published by MIT Press, recently translated summaries (abstracts) of all its articles into Chinese.

The translations were done as part of an ongoing effort to foster increased international dialogue. The translations are available at the journal's website: http://mitpress.mit.edu/jie/translations.

"As China's role in the global environment grows, so too does the importance of high-quality scientific research and communication," says Reid Lifset, JIE editor-in-chief. As the sixth largest economy and most populous country in the world, China's development plays a crucial role in the future of the global environment, he adds.

"This project is especially timely because the Chinese government has announced the 'circular economy' (xun huan jing ji) as a centerpiece of Chinese environmental policy," says Lifset. "The circular economy and industrial ecology (chan ye sheng tai xue) strongly overlap. Both emphasize loop closing -- recycling in the broadest sense -- as a means of moving toward an environmentally sustainable economy."

JIE is the premier journal in the rapidly growing field of industrial ecology, which systematically examines local, regional and global uses and flows of materials and energy in products, processes, industrial sectors and economies. Industrial ecology focuses on the potential role of industry in reducing environmental burdens throughout the product life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials, to the production of goods, to the use of those goods and to the management of the resulting wastes. The journal has been praised for both its readability and timely relevance to key environmental issues. It is the official journal of the International Society for Industrial Ecology.
